I have set the rests in bar 1 of the attached file as invisible.
The "visible" box isn't checked in the inspector.
They do not turn grey in MuseScore and are still visible when I export to PDF.

You made voice 1 rests invisble, but not voice 2 rests. And the Closed Score SATB template has a staff setting of 'Merge matching rests', so they sit on top of one another.
Either make voice 2 rests invisble too, or delete them
