Add a number to a blank tab string

• Mar 28, 2021 - 13:03

On tablature I know how to change the numbers in a tab if the number is wrong, and I now know how to change the X if it needs to be an actual number. But I have one last question. Let's say for example I need to add a number to a tab. Let's say for example a Tab has on it 5th string 3, 4th string 3, and I need to add say a 1 to 6th string which has no number at all on it. So what I'm asking is how to do you add a number to a string that is blank and shows nothing on it.

Same way you added the original note - either click or use the keyboard shortcuts. For more info, see the Handook sections on note input and tablature.

I'm having issues with it. Went to the handbook section and tried to add a number on a blank fret by clicking staff/part properties, edit string data. I click add new string and all it does is marks a fret number red over and over and over again. So it's not telling me how to add a fret number to a blank string.

My guess is this was originally a score for a four-string instrument and you changed something to make it display six staff lines, but you didn't change correctly. Probably whatever it is you were trying to do would have been better accomplished using the Change Instrument button rather than trying to change settings manually, unless it is a non-standard tuning and you had no choice.

Anyhow, as mentioned, we would need you to attach the score to say more. But, I'd also recommend practicing note input using a plain vanilla score, as opposed to one where you've customized settings - lots of things can go wrong if you do it incorrectly. By getting familiar with the system before trying to customize things, you'll be in a better position to hopefully recognize what needs customizing and why.

Ok. Is the following the way I add a number on a string with no number on it? Or is this for something else entirely?

Add a string

Right-click on the staff, select Staff/Part Properties…, then press Edit String Data.
Click on a string pitch and select New String....
Select the new pitch and press OK—or, alternatively, just double-click the new pitch. The new string is inserted below the selected string.

Note: After adding a tablature string you will need to adjust the number of lines in the Staff/Part

The steps you describe are for creating your own custom instrument - like a seven string mandolin or whatever. if you're writing for a standard 6-string guitar you should not be touching any of that. Just add the note directly, click on the tab staff where you want the note, that's about it, no dialogs or settings involved.

It would help if you attached your score and let us know if you're really trying to write for a custom instrument like this, or if you're just trying to write for guitar.
