Playback has stopped working
Playback has stopped working since I installed latest musescore update. I have tried the handbook@How to restore sound if playback stops working, but not found anything to help. I have not tried to replace the soundfont, because I don't know what would be suitable - probably too technical for me anyway.
my sound system uses a soundcore flare mini speaker, which workds fine for all other uses including zoom , and on-line courses. The I/O in preferences is empty. Synthesiser window has correct content in fluid tab

Perhaps you can try the menu option Help > Revert to Factory Settings? That seems to resolve many "awkward" faults.

I tried that, but it still didn't work, except the playback tools had gone from grey back to black.
I went through the 'how to' list again in case anything else had changed. I found in the 'Edit - Preferences - I/O the device was different to the one I am using, so changed to that and pressed the restart button, with still no difference.
Thanks very much for the thought

Things to try:
Edit/Preferences/I/O->Restart Audio;
Help/Manager Resource Menu->Install/Uninstall MDL;
Using bluetooth headphones: In some cases it might also work to toggle (press twice) the MIDI input button on the main toolbar or just restart MuseScore https://musescore.org/en/node/96811 ;
Other audio software open (eg.: Audacity) uninstall.

I'd tried all but the Manager Resource Menu. Just tried that, but it got 3/4 the way through , and declared it was unable to download save and verify the package and i should check my internet connection. Are there any clues in that? But perhaps I wasn't in the right place. Also the HTH - what is it? But perhaps there is some combination of all these suggestions, that I'm not getting, so I'll need to go to a local expert who can get inside my machine. thanks very much for your attempts

"Also the HTH - what is it?"
It's a forum abbreviation for the sign-off remark "Hope This Helps", referring to any remarks above.

Oh thanks! I thought afterwards it might be something like that. see how inexperienced I am at forums

If the playback tools are not greyed out, that's a good sign - seems MuseScore now recognizes your audio device. Next step is to make sure your speakers aren't muted, or that your score is not muted or staff is soloed.

I've turned it back on today, and the playback tools are greyed out again! and I can't remember what I did last time to get it to black - was it just the uninstal?. So perhaps its the local expert I need. I've a couple of general computer queries I need to ask him, so can add this to the list

Probably it was some combination of Help / Revert to Factory Settings and/or changing the options in Edit / Preferences / I/O.
