playback issue - output

I really love Musescore. But with 3.6 and issue has arrived. The software works great with the headphones plugged in. If I accidentally pull the headphone out of the jack, the playback function does not work. I can continue to add notes by hand into staffs but the play function crashes. I have to close the software and reopen it to get the playback sound to work. This is really annoying when you have large scores you are working on. I have tried changing the I/O settings but that doesn't help. Any suggestions on how to fix?
