If you add a barline to a note mid-measure, you can't change its line style (dotted/dashed etc.) in the inspector - the dropdown appears and can be changed, but it doesn't affect the barline and if you deselect and re-select the barline it reverts to whatever style you used when you added it.
Also strangely you can select such a barline and change its vertical span by clicking on some of the other barline options in the palette that have irregular spans, but you can't restore it to normal full barline height (other than by editing the Span from/to in the inspector)

Split the measure, either for Tools > Measure > Split measure at selected note, or by applying the barline while holding Ctrl pressed (and then change to the desired style)

But that's a different operation. You can just delete the barline and add a different one to work around the bug but it's still clearly not expected behaviour as is.
That's why it just a workaround ;-)
