Playback sound stopped working

• Aug 20, 2021 - 14:51

Hello,
My playback sound suddenly stopped working. I was able to play back the score I have been working on earlier today. I added some notes to my score (and could hear them as I added them), but now when I try to play the score, no sound.

I am running Ubuntu Linux 20.04 on a laptop, and just using my laptop speakers. I checked all of the other help files I could find, including Edit -> Preferences - I/O (Pulse Audio is selected), I have restarted audio and midi devices. Also tried View -> Synthesizer - Fluid, and MuseScore_General.sf3 is there. The Ubuntu sound settings show MuseScore at full volume, and when I test my speakers, they work fine.

I have never made any changes to the sound settings in MuseScore. I was using 3.5.something when this first happened, so I downloaded the most recent release of MuseScore - version 3.6.2.548021370, Revision 3224f34, but running the current version has not corrected the problem. I even tried reverting to factory settings from the Terminal window (even though I just downloaded the new version moments ago and have not made any changes to it). But nothing has changed, I can hear individual notes when I add them to my score (or click on an individual note), but the playback is silent.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

If you hear the notes when you add them, this tells me it has nothing to do with audio settings, but more likely, something about the specific soundfont and specific instruments you are using and how they responds to single note dynamics. Somehow, you've set things up in a way where the settings are conflicting with each other.

If you're using the default soundfont and synthesizer settings, and default instrument and staff settings, this all works. But if you change these things, you need to be sure the single note dynamics settings are in sync. If using a soundfont that doesn't support them, then you need to be sure to disable them in the staff settings. Or if changing sounds within the default soundfont, you need to be sure to use sounds that support SND for the instruments that require them (those sounds are marked "Expr"), or conversely otherwise. Some soundfonts may work with SND if you change the settings in View / Synthesizer / Dynamics.

If you continue to have trouble, please attach one of the scores with a problem and say what soundfont(s) you have loaded in View / Synthesizer (the Fluid and Zerberus tabs), and what settings you see on the Dynamics tab of that same window. If you just did a factory reset, then presumably you have the defaults, and the issue is more likely the settings made in your score, but still, knowing for sure what you see in the Synthesizer window could be helpful.

There we go. When I went to change the sound setting for a cymbal (wanted my "crash" cymbal to sound more like a suspended cymbal), I inadvertently soloed the channel next to it (and that part is not written as of yet). And since that was the last channel of many (full concert band instrumentation), it was hidden from view in the mixer until I slid the slider all the way to the right. Unsoloed that instrument, and my piece is blaring once again!
Thank you!!
