Music treated as Sustained but isn't

• Nov 7, 2021 - 13:48

I have been working on a thing for a while and I opened it today and played it. but it was like everything was sustained despite the fact It isn't.

I tried with a few other scores some have the same problem others don't

I have tried importing an old MIDI file and it had the same problem

I just tried opening the scores that had the weird thing and they are fixed
Anyone have an idea on why it happened and/or how to avoid it in the future

Are you using an external synth for the playback? Could be at some point a pedal on message got sent but no corresponding pedal off. Same is possible with MuseScore's internal synth, just a lot less likely. If that happens, shutting the synth or program down and restarting is the usual fix.

I have experienced a similar behaviour (see https://musescore.org/en/node/315117) but no-one could reproduce and so I assumed it was a feature of my set up. I can sometimes reproduce the problem if I press play too quickly after starting MuseScore. I use an app called Process Hacker that allows me to monitor the memory usage of individual apps in real time. If I monitor the memory used by MuseScore and wait for it to reach a stable level (20 seconds say), I can guarantee that the problem will not occur.

I also get a similar problem where one instrument sometimes plays as if all notes were 1/16ths. Again, if I wait 20 seconds before hitting play, the problem doesn't occur.

If either problem shows up, the only way I have found to get back to normal playback is to restart MuseScore and not be so impatient.

If the OP can confirm that he is seeing similar behaviour one of us can raise an issue for it.
