Bug?

• Sep 9, 2014 - 15:21

In the 1.3-version I could choose between 3 kinds of Tuba (Brass).
The Beta version has only 1, and I think it's a better one.
It's only that the sound (on my computer) isn't clear; knowing better, I would normally think my speakers are far away gone.
Also, there's very little to control the sound (chorus/reverb).
Can somebody help me with this?

Frans

In fact 2.0 beta has 13 kinds of Tuba - do you have All Instruments displayed?

Reverb and chorus controls in the mixer are now redundant for the internal synth.

Effect control is done from the Effects Rack in the Synthesiser section.

If the Zita reverb effect controls aren't displayed, load a plugin by means of the Plugin Manager and restart MuseScore.

If I click on Instruments - Brass, I see only 1 Tuba; then there is Euphonium, Bass trombone etc., but as far as I see just 1 Tuba.
As you say, reverb and chorus in the mixer don't have any effect.
In the Effects Rack I only see (under Master Effects) No Effects or Zita 1; can't find any controls, so just one reverb?
Hope I'm terribly wrong on this.

Then there is stil that ''overgained" sound.

Thanx so far

See above - you need to show "All Instruments" instead of "Common Instruments" in the dropdown list at the top of the screen if you wish to see all the less-common varieties of instruments. Or type "Tuba" into the search box at the bottom of the screen.

Not sure what you mean by "overgained" - could you post a score that demonstrates the problem you are hearing so we can see if we hear soemthing similar?

First of all I want to thank you all for your patient answers to my questions; I was too hasty on some items and didn't look further to discover different things.
Never the less, I get this terrible sound on my Tuba.
There's a humm going with it.
Does anyone hear what I mean in the recording?
Anyway, if it's only on my computer, what can be the issue?
It wasn't there in the 1.3-version.

Thanx,
Frans

Export your score to audio, put it on soundcloud and mark it up with a comment where you hear the humm. This will help us to understand if we hear the same or not, when playing your mscz file.

OK I have solved your audio problem.

I had forgotten that I had switched to the .sf2 version of the soundfont whilst testing something else.

Switching back to the default .sf3 soundfont reveals the problem.

Unfortunately an artifact has been introduced during the compression process to convert to the .sf3 format.

This is a known issue and is caused by a bug in libsndfile which we are waiting to be fixed by the author.

Attenuating the sample during the compression works around the problem for most instruments, but not, apparently, tuba.

The remedy is to download and use the .sf2 version of the soundfont available from my dropbox account here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ouh3jyjtgsisra/FluidR3Mono_GM2-8.zip?dl=0

If you need assistance with the procedure for installing this, please come back here.

As I'm not even an amateur in pc's, I indeed would be glad if you explain me how to get this sounds in my Musescore, so that i can try them out.
I downloaded it from your dropbox, but then I have no clue.

Thanx
Frans

You need to extract the .sf2 file from the ZIP into the MuseScore Soundfont directory which should be at Documents\MuseScore2\Soundfonts if you're on a Windows machine.

You then go to the Synthesiser window in MuseScore (click on it in the View Menu)

There you will see your current soundfont listed.

Click Add and you should see a list of the soundfonts available including the FluidR3mono_GM2-8 you extracted from the ZIP.

Select that and it should appear in the list of soundfonts in the Synthesiser Window.

MuseScore seems to default to the soundfont that is at the top of the list, so you may need to select it and move it to the top of the list.

Come back if you have trouble.

Please describe *exactly* what you you are doing, step by step, and say at what point the error message occurs. But I am assuming you are omitting the step of unzipping the soundfont, or else you did the unzipping but are telling MuseScore to use the ZIP file rather than the SF2 file created when you unzipped it.

I still cannot open it in Musescore.
I can open the new soundfont in Musescore 1.3, as the manual says, but in the Beta-version it doesn't work. Clicking on Add only gives me the old soundfont twice.
And of course, I unzipped it.
I work with Windows 7 Home Premium.
So far nothing to worry, as I listened to some instruments of the FluidR3MonoGM2-8.sf2 in the 1.3-version and I like the old soundfont (TimGM6Mb) better for the instruments I use.
Still a pitty that it doesn't work.

Thanx everyone,
Frans

It works! Thank you, guys!
Although, when I start Musescore, it says: "cannot read file; unknown type", I open Musescore and all the steps you described work.

Thanx again
Frans

The error message you describe is the one displayed when you try to open a MuseScore backup file without removing the comma from the file suffix.

This makes me wonder whether somehow MuseScore is trying to open a backup file on startup.

I'm not sure why this should happen - but MuseScore 2 is still in beta so it could be a bug.

What do you have defined as your startup option Franz?

In reply to by karelmollen

Tempo is controlled using Tempo Text, which you can add from the palette or Ctrl+Alt+T. This is the same as 1.3. There is also the Play Panel where you can override the tempo temporarily - like if you want to practice along with theiece so you wish it played slower than it is supoosed to be - but whereas in 1.3 those temporary adjustments were saved, in 2.0 they are not.

Not sure which "set as default" button you mean - in which dialog?

In reply to by karelmollen

Set as default means that Musescore will automatically load that soundfont on Startup.

I'm not sure about Load from score, but I do know that it is now possible to use Save to score to associate a particular soundfont with a score.

I guess Load from score is going to load that soundfont.

Tempo is handled very differently in MuseScore 2.

The primary means of changing it is still by means of a tempo text, but you can override that in the Inspector by unticking the Tempo as Text box and entering the tempo you want directly into the Inspector.
