Anytime I hit play on any score, the sound that comes out is so distorted I fear for the life of my speakers. It sounds like static and distortion, almost like a clocking error but I can't find a way to fix it. I have reinstalled and been through every setting I can think of/find.

I have a similar problem, sometimes ... and sometimes frequently. It's most prevalent during first play on opening a score. Usually it goes away or diminishes as the score plays. And often repeated plays are less affected or unaffected.
I'll note that I usually use the Mellow Grand Piano sound. And the sound I hear is a light cracking, like static. Annoying, but it has never left me with fear for my speakers. I expect to upgrade to a more powerful Mac in the near future, and I haven't reported the issue because I thought it might be related to an overwhelmed processor. Though I can certainly substantiate the issue of "static" during playback, sometimes I don't hear the problem for days.
