How to highlight a score for emphasis

• Feb 13, 2022 - 14:16

Hi,
I need to highlight a part of the score (solo piano) in color. There are instructions on how to do this at https://musescore.org/en/node/270788 . Unfortunately, the instruction does not work.

3. Right-click on the newly typed "a" character and choose "Text Properties;"
4. Tick the "Frame" box,

However, there is no “Frame” box in the "Properties of the score text". Maybe the instruction refers to M2, while I use M3? Maybe there is another way? I need to highlight ~ 10 bars on 2-3 lines. Thank you very much!

The HowTo you've linked is not on the 3.x listing of HowTo's, so it is likely for an older version (2.x by the looks of it).
Since MS3 you can find the Text Properties in the Inspector (F8)

Yes, thanks, I found it in the Inspector, however, it will not perform as described in the old instruction. Entering spaces would not work. I managed to create a colored square, but it would not make rectangle of desired length and it cannot be dragged down to cover bass staff, it would increase space between the two; it cannot be extended to the next line....
Is there any solution?

Using text isn't really recommended normally. Instead, try using a line from the Lines palette. Set it's thickness to 4sp to make it exactly a staff space tall, set its color and transparency using the Inspector. Then add to a palette (Ctrl+Shift+drag) for easy reuse. Nice thing is it will automatically be applied the right length if you select the range you want it to apply to.

It's definitely way simpler. You can set the height directly rather than guesstimating based on how many spaces you enter, the width is handled automatically based on your selection (although you can also fine tune from there), and everything scales perfectly as your layout changes. And as mentioned, by adding one of these to a custom palette, you can then apply your highlighting in just a few seconds next time.

Thanks, I will need to study how to create and edit a palette!
One question about this method. I want to highlight the whole score, which is, naturally, two staffs for piano. Therefore, i need to make the line approx. 13.5 int. thick. But the line not only increases its thickness, it also expands sideways, beyond handles. Than can be handled, but somewhat inconvenient. Is there any cure for that?

There is a nice bug "add palettes" button at the top of the palette to add new ones, or just use an existing one. Then Ctrl+Shift+drag an element from your score into it.

For extending over two staves, probably it's simpler to do each staff separately., both to avoid issues of the staff distance not necessarily remaining constant, also because of the stretching issue you mention.
