from A clarinet to B flat clarinet

• Mar 11, 2022 - 18:21

Hi. I have a part for A clarinet that I need to transpose to B flat clarinet. When I started a new score, I didn't see an option to add A clarinet. I chose the B flat option and then 4 flats, but the new score has 2 flats and won't let me change the key signature to 4 flats. I started over with a concert C instrument and 4 flats, am writing the notes as they appear on the original, and will then transpose it all down a semitone, so it should end up in G. Is there a better way to do this? The attached PDF shows A Clarinet for the first 3 dances, which is what I need to change. The rest of the piece is in B flat. Thanks!

The best way to do this is to replicate the original and then change the instrument.

So start by creating a new score choosing A clarinet as the instrument.

Make sure the concert pich buttin on the toolbar is not selected.

Use the correct concert pitch key signature - for that first section written in 4 flats for clarinet in A apply a 1 flat key signature from the pallet.

Enter the music as written in the original.

When you get to the section for Clarinet in Bb add an instrument change text from the Add>Text menu. (Don't use the text from the pallet it is broken and doesn't work for transposing instruments.)

Continue transcribing as written in 5he original.

You can now right click in the first measure and in the stave properties change the instrument to Bb clarinet. The notation should transpose notes and key signatures automatically. You can then remove the Instrument change to Bb added earlier.

Try it on an abbreviated test section first.

In the instrument page, double click "choose instruments" . Select the pull down menu next to "common". Select "All instruments" to find A clarinet.
