Alignment of lyrics under two notes

• Apr 5, 2022 - 14:22

Dear musescore,

attached there is an example of how the alignment of the lyrics change depending if there is a hyphen following or not. I think it is not intended that that "hat" in the second verse is centered under the first note while the "Lieb-", "sin-" and "stil-" in the other verses are not. It just looks not right.

If possible, musescore should move the "hat" in the second verse to the same position as the "Lieb". Same applies to the "ist" and "Treu" in verse one and two. This reflects also the traditional score style (see old style images).

And I know, I can force musescore to rearrange the "hat", "ist" and "Treue" by adding __, but I think it should not be necessary to do so. It is not very intuitive and also not very beautiful, especially when the __ is small and looks like a dot.

Yes, thank you. I could also make the underscore invisible, I suppose.

My main point was: Does the musescore team want the behavior I pointed out, or is it unintentional? I think it is not recommended to have alignment left and center under the same note for it does not look as pretty as the "old styles" I attached.

I am no programmer, but I think musescore should make a check like: If the lyric spans over two notes (i.e. no lyric on the following note and a slur connecting the notes), make alignment left.

Use Format > Style > Text Styles > Lyrics Odd Lines and choose a different alignment.
Then do the same with Lyrics Even Lines.

Alternatively, you can use the Inspector.

Using the melisma line is the correct thing to do here. MuseScore should be smart enough to not show it iif it would be too short, same as we do for a number of other lines. I believe MuseScore 4 will address that.
