How to Uninstall Musescore / Go Back To Previous Version?

• Apr 11, 2022 - 23:17

I recently tried to open a file, but it said that it was saved on the most recent version of musescore, and that I would have to update it. I have been using the same musescore update for 3 years now. So I updated it and I absolutely hate the latest version. If this is what musescore was like when I started, I would have just continued handwriting my music literally with paper and pencil

So I tried to go back and download the previous version that I had. musescore supplies a page with a list of previous versions.

I go to start up the installation of musescore 3.2.2 and get this message:

"A later version of musescore 3 is already installed. Setup will now exit"

My question is: How do i revert my musescore back to 3.2.2 ?

Hmm, MuseScore has not changed much at all since 3.2.2, other than literally thousands of bugs fixed and couple of small new improvements here and there. Are you sure you didn't accidentally grab an experimental nightly build? What in particular seemed different to you?

Or if you really mean 2.3.2 - it's true there have been more major improvements since then, but still. nothing that wouldn't take but a couple of days to get used to. On the other hand., MuseScore 4 is on the horizon, and it will represent a far bigger change, so probably not much point in getting used to MuseScore 3 just to change again. If 2.3.2 is what you've been using and you don't mind not being to access anyone else's scores, I'd just reinstall that. But, the error message you gavce seems to suggest you rea.ly were on MuseScore 3, in which case, again, I'm confused, because there would be almost no obvious visible difference between that and the current 3.6.2

I downloaded the most recent version directly from musescore.org. Things look entirely different.

  • For the palette, I used to just be able to click on the titles and it would open the category. now i have to click on the little arrow on the side. Also The palette is spread out to the point where I have to scroll through (a little) to access all the features on the advanced palette. I didn't have to do that before

    • Adding instruments is more difficult than before. If I want a duplicate of a particular instrument then instead of just tapping on it in the list of instruments I already have and pressing add instrument, I have to go in the menu and search for it and then add it

    • The colors for the 4 different voices are all changed now. The 2nd voice is a brighter shade, and the 4th voice is less distinguishable from voice 1. this affects me because I am moderately colorblind.

    • The accidentals also look thinner and thornier

    • The new score title fonts are harsher and thinner, and the time signature font is thick and vague

    • Everything in general is just harder on my eyes than it was before

The old version I had was presumably musescore 3.2.2, the one from June 30th 2019

It’s true you now need to double-click palette names, or the little arrow, on the plus side, you now can easily create your own “greatest hits” palette of all your favorite symbols you can just leave open all the time. It’s a great time saver, and I think you’ll like it.

The new font is professionally designed to be more up to modern engraving standard - more acceptable to publishers if you should ever wish to go in a more professional direction. But if you prefer the old font anyhow, you can switch that easily in the score style. You can also change the voice colors if you don’t like them in the advanced tab of preferences - we added more preferences for this specific to help with people with visual impairment. Also, we now fully support NVDA, JAWS, and Orca, for people who rely on screenreaders - support was partial at best in 3.2.

I’m not totally understanding what you are saying about adding instruments, but it sounds like a slight change to behavior of one button?

Anyhow, it sounded like you were talking about a much bigger change than these details :-)

I think if you look over the long list of improvements, those small visual differences will seem pretty inconsequential in comparison - having instruments automatically added in the correct order, having staves spaced automatically, the addition of Roman numeral analysis, chord symbols playback, easily customizable palettes, single click editing of many elements, automatic handling of instrument changes, staff type changes between pitched and unpitched, correct layout of tremolos including "old style", portamento playback, new jazz fonts, etc - quite a long list of pretty significant improvements actually.

But in any case, you can certainly uninstall it and then reinstall the older version if you’re not interested in taking advantage of the current version has to offer, but it really is worth checking out!
