Palettes
In the past, when I created a new file, a palette automatically appeared to the left of the music. For some reason, this has stopped happening. I can bring up the master palette with a keyboard shortcut, but I need to do so every time that I want to add some palette feature to a note. Clearly, I have made some change that I am not aware of. Can anyone suggest how to restore the automatic appearance and persistence of the palette?

It's not really clear what you mean for me. You can dock/undock the palette (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/palettes#view-hide-palettes), but the master palette itself isn't dock-able, so you've to open it each time again.

I think I managed to dock the default palette. I had not realized that the small rectangle that appeared when I selected view > Palettes had to be dragged down to show the whole palette. Thanks
