Trying to add staff of Baroque lute tab, but can't
I've tried to change the second part to Baroque lute tab, but I just can't do it. I've chosen the instrument, gone into advanced and chosen 6 line French tab, but it won't change.
Also, it won't make a sound when I choose play. I've checked the mixer and it is up. It makes sounds when I place notes, but no sound when I choose play.

You first picture shows you went to Edit / Isntruments, but never actually changed it to tab. Works fine for me when I do that - no need to mess with staff/part properties at all unless you wish to further customize. but you definitely need to change to tab in Edit / Instruments first. You'll want to scroll that display horizontally to get to the control for that.

Oh, wow. I had to actually drag the edge of the window to reveal that.
Thank you very much.

I could get tab, but I cannot get tab that matches the upper part. I must have started from a template someone else made. I don't see how I can copy it. I tried clicking on it and cmd-c, but that doesn't work. I cannot find an exact match among the instruments. The upper part is called Laute 13 chörig and shows custom tablature. Even though I choose custom tablature, it doesn't change.
Thank you in advance.

Do you want to add an instrument, a 2nd lute, or a linked staff?

I've got two lutes there. That is all I need as it is a duet. I have a couple of problems though.
1. upper lute makes no sound
2. bottom lute is not the right formatting. I want it like the top lute
3. There is a plus sign in measure 5 I can't get rid of. It actually puts silence for two beats.
Also, I have a really hard time putting in diapassions. The only way I can figure out how to do it is put a note on the 6th course first to hold the rhythm, then put another note and use the arrow key to get to 4 (for instance), hit a, then go and erase the note on the 6th course. If I copy a measure and try to alter it, it is the same process.

Problem: there is no excess rests. but notes. Ctrl+Del would get rid of the +, but also of those notes

D'oh! Didn't see the M was on.
I've got it pretty much completed. There is still that extra 2 beats in bar 5 with that weird plus sign I can't seem to get rid of and the look of the rhythm signs is not what I want in either part.
There is something wrong at the very end, but I have to dig out the score I transcribed this from to fix it or listen carefully.
I sure appreciate your help on this.
Many thanks.

That measure 5 just has more beats than the time sig asks for, the actual duration is longer than the nominal. Select the excess notes and press Ctrl+Del, or right click, measure properties, change actual duration.

Not sure what rhythm signs you are talking about , the notes above the staff?
If so: disable them in the advanced staff properties

Something that looks more like this. https://musescore.com/user/10806561/scores/6095733.
I've looked at the file. I can't figure out how to change just the rhythm signs. I like the font I have for the upper part, except for the rhythm signs, but the bottom part is in Ren lute style.

Disable those note values in the advanced staff properties
Or check the settings of that example and give your score the same settings

Thank you. I don't understand about disabling certain note values. Why would I do that? Is this referring to bar 5? There is a plus sign there. When I click on it and open the inspector, nothing shows up.

No, different things.
1. the + sign: right-click into measure 5, merasure properties, change the actual duration to match the nominal doration. This will loose a few notes!
2. the note values: rght-click into the staff, staff properties > advanced properties > note values, tick none

I think I got that. Like this, right?
That fixed m. 5
When I click note values and tick none, all my rhythm signs in the staff disappear. Maybe I didn't get across what I was trying to say about the rhythm signs. They are the right value, I just don't like the style. I got much closer now, thanks to your pointing to that though. Repeat at new measures solves the problem of the rest not appearing. Comparing the two staves, I've gotten pretty close, putting the cyphers on the lines and getting the rhythms right. I just cannot get the bottom part to have the same font. The upper part shows chörg
but the bottom part says course
In the list of All I cannot find that chörg.
Almost there.
Thanks for your help.

In your last screen shot of the note values dialogue, try one of the other choices in the font drop down list. You don’t have to stick with MS “French Baroque”.

You are right. For some reason I looked at another font before, but I think because I didn't have 'on lines' checked it looked different. In fact, Gaultier is the same one.
It is looking pretty much they way I want it. Not quite ready for prime time. There are still a couple of things that have me stumped, like double half note rhythm signs in m. 20 and 43.
Thank you very much.

Ah, unchecking show rests cures that.
