Project
Create a new score, Keyboard, piano, done. Use note input, add middle C, E and G above it. Select the G note and add a chord symbol, label it "C". Now, select the whole rest in Measure 2 and click play. The C chord tone plays even though there are no notes in the measure.
To me, a chord symbol is notation that is not played, similar to a piano or forte mark in a piece. I also could not find a preference to turn off the chord symbol playing.

Chord symbols do play, that is by design. You a can disable this
You can disable chord playback overall, for specific chords, and you can even set the duration of the chord playback in the properties of the chord symbol. See the attached picture for the first option.

Thank you. I found it. It was confusing and hidden to me. I had a 3 part voice, guitar and piano score, so I could not hear the chord tones until I change the instrument to organ (the piano part was in root position triads and the chord tones were hints for the sub-literate guitarist). And when I deleted notes in a measure I found them still playing, but could not find a setting to disable the feature.
I do find playing chord tones helpful when putting in a vocal line from a lead sheet to confirm that I an entering the melody correctly.
thanks again.
