Special noteheads are ear-piercingly loud

I'm writing a piece for handbells and I need to use the diamond notehead. However, when I do this, it causes the diamond-head notes to sound extremely ear-piercingly loud and it drowns out the rest of the parts. I've tried applying specific dynamics to certain parts, as well as adjusting the diamond-head notes' velocities, but it doesn't seem to work.
