MuseScore 4 crashes when exporting MusicXML

• Jan 8, 2023 - 16:08

I am trying to export a MuseScore 4 file (see https://musescore.org/en/node/341700) as MusicXML so that I can instead use MuseScore 3. However, MuseScore 4 is crashing every time I try to export it as Music XML. I've tried adjusting how I export (compressed / uncompressed, full score, etc.) to no avail.

So now I'm stuck and can't get this score into MuseScore 3, which seems to be more stable. What else can I try?

OS: macOS 13.1, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 4.0.0-223472200, revision: 5485621

In MS3, corruption in the separate instrument parts was often a problem. So in MS3 one standard remedy for corruptions was to delete all the Parts which had been generated, leaving just the main score.

But in MS 4.0 I cannot find a way to delete the Parts. See this thread titled "Delete Parts in MS4":
https://musescore.org/en/node/339395

I fear that your score may possibly be a write-off.

I think the main problem is all the measures in the Keys part that have too many beats. Starting in measure 21. Deleting that part doesn't help. Probably other instruments have beat problems also.

Thanks, I'll see if I can track down additional beats. Is there a quick way to check for that?

And just for my better understanding, how is it even possible to add excessive beats into a measure? I thought (at least in MS 3) that if you, say, added a half note rest into a 4/4 measure that already had more than a half note worth of material in it, that it would overwrite things in the following measure (preserving four beats per measure). Is that not the case?

Where did you get this score? It kind of looks like a PDF import. With the Insert tool, you can add what you want (but why would anyone do that). This looks like the kind of thing that happens from PDF.
You may have to look at each measure. The marimba has problems also. I deleted the piano, marimba, and vibraphone parts and it still crashed.

Cause of crash identified: the MuseScore file contains measures with a measureRepeatCount element, but without the corresponding MeasureRepeat element, e.g. measure 27 in part 2. The MusicXML exporter cannot handle this.
