It would be nice to be able to place more than one double whole notes or larger notes in a measure instead of having to place multiple whole notes and then linking them manually

That's possible already and ever since too, you'd just need measures (or a time signature) large enough for that, like 2/1, 4/2, 8/4 for a single double whole, 4/1, 8/2, 16/4 for a single maxima or 2 double whole notes, etc.
