Can't Change Audio Device in Musescore 4

• Jul 5, 2023 - 22:08

I have been trying to upgrade to Musescore 4.0 Portable on a Linux Mint computer. I cannot change the audio device in the I/O preferences from "system default" to the configuration that works in Musescore 2 on the same machine. I have included screenshots below. Maybe more precisely, when I click on the audio device, Musescore 4.0 allows "system default" to be selected but only shows "system default" in the list of options.

When I press the "Play" button. Musescore 4.0 shows animations of the notes being played, and the Mixer pulses along with notes, but NO sound is output. (Musescore 2 works correctly with the animations and with sound output).

I tried resetting Musescore 4.0 with the "-F" switch to force the software back to its default state to see if that would help but with no luck.

Please let me know if there are any solutions or workarounds for this. Ideally, I could make the proper selections through the software, but I would be happy if I could tweak the software INI file to get the application working (or something like that). I don't want to make changes at the operating system or driver level (I have seen some recommendations for this). ALL of my other applications that use my sound card work, and I don't want to break their setups.

Thanks for looking at this.

Seems to me that both versions are using "default"' What is the default device? I would turn off "Exclusive mode". That won't affect other software.

Portable?

Thanks for looking at this so quickly.

Good catch. The working device on Musescore was supposed to be "pipewire." I may have scrambled it when I took the screenshot. The corrected screenshot is attached.

Pipewire is the audio server for my Linux installation. The device is "alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo" or, in plain English, "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo."

I am unsure what you mean by "Exclusive mode," so any education there would be greatly appreciated. :-)

I am running Musescore 4.0 as an AppImage. It shows up on my system as "Musescore 4.0 Portable." It might be named differently if I installed it from a repository or Flatpak. I got the AppImage directly from Musescore.org.

Thanks again.

Darn Linux. ;-)

I am attaching the .INI files created by Musescore 2.0 and 4.0.

Do you know of any way to map the old Musescore 2.0 keys/values to the new Musescore 4.0 formats? That might be a workaround to the Preferences panel not showing the audio device information I need.

Thanks again for looking at this.
