- Accept all other defaults
- Click Done
- Score appears
- Manual entry - Choose quarter note
- Type F or mouse click F (4th line bass clef)

If I choose cello from the Bowed String instruments note entry in bass clef works fine.

I can't reproduce this in Windows. Hopefully a Mac user will try. Can you post the score instead of a picture?

No crash, odd chord or obnoxious sound for me with either a new score or the one you attached.
Have you tried Help>Revert to factory settings?> Note that this will reset any customisations - styles, pallets, shortcuts - so save those first if you would mind losing them.

Make sure you don't have a MIDI loop on your system - a case where the output of MuseScore is routed back to its input. See Edit / Preferences / I/O from within MuseScore, but also the settings of any other MIDI software or hardware you are using.

Marc, your name rang a bell. I am the author of the MiBAC Music Software programs. My partner at the time the business started was Malcolm Lynn Baker who taught at Lamont after he left Carleton. Lynn is an excellent jazz saxophonist. Lynn developed the jazz riffs and chord voicings and I wrote the software for the MiBAC Jazz Improvisation software back in 1987. Lynn did not get tenure at Carleton and sold his part of the business to me. I wrote the Music Lessons I and II software for Mac and Windows after Lynn left. Hi, nice "small world" story! Lynn recruited me as a grad student at DU and then hired me to teach there after graduation. This then set into motion a whole chain of events that ultimately led to my doing what I do today. As you presumably know, Lynn retired from DU a few years back, and I actually left around that same time as well. Lynn has since moved out of state, but I see him on Facebook and will send your regards :-)
