Musescore 4 is a bust for Windows 10

• Aug 30, 2023 - 06:21

I have been using Musescore for years, most recently 3.6 for quite a while. I love it. After the regular prompting when I start Musescore 3 for a long while, I finally upgraded to Musescore 4 on my Dell Windows 10 laptop. It's been a nightmare. Many display issues (ex. Mixer hiding behind score) and worst of all I can't get rid of a ringing sound on the notes when I input them. And playback is very glitchy. I am uninstalling version 4 and going back to version 3.6. I hope you continue to support version 3.6 I am a pretty experienced computer user, so I suspect I am not alone about not wanting version 4.

Does your computer meet all the required specs listed on the download page? If not, there are a few settings that might help. I have MU4 running on 4 different computers. 2 of witch are underpowered.

You can get rid of "update/upgrade nagging" via menu item: Edit > Preferences > Update.
Then check back here:

at your own convenience.

I am a long time MuseScorer and noticed the rush to push MuseScore 4 "out the door" (without further delay).
After which I encountered this:

I do use both versions because I am engaged in the forum, and some folk here are still using MS3.
One thing that irks me is this:

As anyone who has played an instrument, or even touch-typed, the importance of "muscle memory" and reflex cannot be denied.

That link basically discusses 2 button choices - Primary and secondary action buttons. It does, however, mention:

That last sentence states: "So ‘Cancel’ is always on the right of OK button for Windows platform."
I'm on Windows and so I wonder why on earth 'Cancel' was moved in MuseScore 4, and why 'Save' was moved rightmost, completely the opposite of MuseScore 3:

As I mentioned, "change for the sake of change". But why?

Can you explain more about what you mean regarding the Mixer and ringing sound? I'm not experiencing anything like that and am not aware of any issues reported by others on GitHub. In order for the developers to investigate a problem, it's important someone first report the issue with a sample score & steps to reproduce the problem. if there is an issue with these things on your system, probably it also occurs for some others, but it's not something known already, so we'd definitely like to understand what is happening!

As for glitchy playback, try changing your audio device's sample rate to 44.1 kHz - some systems seem to have issues with anything else. See https://musescore.org/en/node/352635 for more information, and please followup there.

In any case, no need to uninstall MuseScore 4 even if you also use MuseScore 3 - they sit side by side with no issues.
