Selecting with mouse

In this piece, how could I select just the top voice in the treble clef with clicking and dragging? Seems that no matter what I do it selects the whole measure. I understand it wouldn't be perfect because of range problems but I can't do it at all.
In general, how can I select just the notes I want out of a measure filled with chords?

Related question: Where is the "selection filter" everyone talks about? This is all version 4.

The selection filter is also available by pressing F6.

Since both chord notes are written in voice 1, you can't do that directly.

The only way I see is the 'Explode' command. The selection filter does not help because all notes are in voice 1.
You must insert two additional staves on the piano between the treble clef and the bass clef. If they appear in bass clef, change it to treble clef. Two additional staves are necessary because you have some chords with three stacked notes.
Then select the upper treble staff completely and apply the "Tools/Explode" command. This will move the notes of the lower pitch to the new staves. Then you can select, copy or modify each staff as usual.
Those chords with only two notes are then identical in staff 2 and 3.
If you want to keep the original piano system, add a second piano and copy the notes into it. (Backup)
