A real big problem

• Oct 22, 2023 - 13:22

A couple of nights ago, I was working on a short score of 5 bars, which was giving me problems, suddenly Musescore 4.1 crashed on me and I was unable to open it again.
Musescore shows the splash screen, then the icon appears on my task bar, Hovering over the icon reveals a small blank screen which won't convert to full page.
I have checked to find out if it's still open and running in the background....it's not.
I have deleted and reinstalled several times, with no joy.
Versions 2 & 3 are working, but revert to using these is a backward step, as I have gotten used to the operation of Musescore 4....and it will mean a whole new relearning curve...also the scores created in 4.1 are not backward compatible.
Please.....Please....Please!!! Can anybody help me!?!!

Re-install almost never works.
Try opening using a mscz file.
Disconnect any external audio device you may be using.
Shut you computer completely off. Then re-boot.

The place where the score would be is blank.
Earlier veresions of Musescore open Scores created earlier,,,,but Version 4.1 will load nothing,,,,not even empty scores.
Re sound...I am using Windows internal sound....sometimes Bluetooth headphones....but I don't turn them on until after Musescore is up and running.
Thanks for caring,

Exactly the opposite: first connect the Bluetooth device and then start MuseScore.
But this has nothing to do with a blank screen.

Are you confusing something? MuseScore 4 files result in a blank screen when opened with MuseScore 3 and pressing 'Ignore'.

I don't have version 3. I deleted it, and any attempt to download it again results in defaulting to version 4.1.
But you are right....version 2.1 does open the score...but all I get is a blank screen where the score should be.
I think somehow, I have corrupted the files or Musescore 4.1 itself, while I was working on them....
Version 4.1 will not open anything.

I'm getting something similar.
MU V4 loads but then nothing - W10 task manager shows it to be loaded fine but not using any resources.
Tried the uninstall/reinstall variations.
Mine hasn't crashed as such and has been fine in almost daily use up until today.
My current workround is to input the PDF files created from V4 into ScanScore and change my notation editor preference from V4 to V3 .... which is a pain..

Much easier!
Use a zip tool and open the mscz file from MuS 4, extract the mscx file. In almost all cases it opens without problems in MuS 3 - the main problem I found is the measure repeat characters used in MuS 4.
And you have to reformat the text field for the title.

Alternatively, you can use Jojo-Schmitz' version 3.7, which can open MuS 4 files and does not have the two problems mentioned.

Sometimes a complete shutdown is better.
Executed with "Shutdown" while holding down the Shift key. (Win 10)
The next startup then takes a short time longer.

That worked!....it opened Musescore 4.1.....but playback is now very gltchy.

Tried all things listed....still very stuttery and glitchy.
Looking at other forums, it seems Musescore 4 is well known for this problem.....Also 3 does not open 4, as indicated....
Musescore 4 used to work perfectly on my laptop until I had the initial problem....now it's useless....and I pay for it!!!!

You need to know that!
Certainly not for the software MuseScore 4, because it's free!
Probably for the service on musescore.com; here we are on musescore.org dealing with problems with MuseScore notation software. They are different things!

If your Musescore 4 isn't working correctly, the first thing to check is whether your computer even meets the minimum Musescore 4 requirements mentioned. See here: https://musescore.org/en/download#System-requirements
Maybe post a score here so others with MuS 4 can check it.

Generally speaking, stuttering audio is a sign that your operating system and MuseScore disagree about the sample rate for your audio device. Find the settings for it in your OS (or in the software that came with your audio device) and change it from 48 to 44.1 kHz, or vice versa.

Thank you Mark….Thanks to the forum I have been largely successful in restoring Musescore 4.1 to working condition.
The last problem, stuttering and erratic playback has largely been repaired by removing a swag of files from my desktop.
It’s not playing at 100% but I can work and live with the minor faults aI’m experiencing.
Very tempted to take the course on Mastering Musescore 4.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
