Musescore 4 Not Running Properly (2)

• Sep 19, 2024 - 17:13

Hi there! This is going to be a very long message.

My download of MuseScore 4 is not working. I've been using the program for 4 years and it has been a cornerstone of my musical career. I've recently upgraded from a Macbook Air 11 to a Windows 11 PC for a home studio. No matter what I do, nothing is making this app run correctly.

Problem: Once I launch the program, its icon appears on the taskbar like normal. Hovering over the icon showcases the splash page as intended. However, clicking the program doesn't do anything. The first time the app opens is completely unaccessible, but when I open another tab I notice that it moves it completely offscreen. While I can't drag it, I can use the program organizer tool at the top right of any program and move it to the main menu. From here, none of the functions work except for opening the test score. Outside of that and exploring the main page (can go plugins and tutorial videos tab), If I try anything (trying to open a new score for example) it completely freezes. Oddly enough, Task manager does not register MuseScore as "not responding", so possibly its a settings issue?
**It is important to note that the loading screen does not appear on my pc like it did on mac. I'm not sure if that is apart of the problem, but I thought it was worth noting.

Solutions I attempted:
-Uninstall and reinstall (I've done this like 15 times)
-Downloading earlier versions + not from Muse Hub (Muse Hub is perfectly operational)
-Turning off Controlled folder + Deactivating all security measures on my third party VPN
-Running without any audio programs enabled (only DAW on my computer atm is Cakewalk by Bandlab)
-Completely erasing any trace of a musescore file before reinstalling (factory reset included)

Computer Specs
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core Processor 4.50 GHz
Installed RAM: 64.0 GB (63.1 GB usable)
Motherboard: X670 AORUS ELITE AX
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition: Windows 11 Pro
Version: 23H2
Instralled On; 9/‎7/‎2024
OS build; 22631.4169

Plz help this is my main program use for my compositions and I'd rather not just give up and switch to something else. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Just ran it and it works! Thank you for your help.

I guess the latest versions past 4.2.2 just straight up don't work with windows 11? I tried seeing if I updated it through musescore, and that let it to crash. Guess I'll stick with this one until the latest versions are compatible with mine. Thanks for your help!

It's not clear if you've tried 4.4.2. I recommend completely uninstalling all versions of MuseScore 4, then installing 4.4.2 and 4.4.2 only. If you continue to have problems, follow the instructions in the appendix of the online handbook to revert to factory settings If you continue to have trouble, then follow up here, and post a screen recording showing what happens on the first startup after the revert (so, do the revert again, then a screen recording).

Followed as you said. Wiped anything related to MuseScore clean from the hard drive. Here's the result.

So unfortunately, a screen recording doesn't work on the files. Instead I've uploaded the issue to this google
drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kq0peCdFoLPdWJZ5M44kMbTnF1-bvdF_/view?…

As you can hear, I cannot click on any functions without the windows error noise, though on my task manager the program does not read as unresponsive. Very strange, I've never seen something like this before.

Let me know what you think

After the factory reset, you should be seeing a dialog asking you to choose between light/dark theme, etc. Apparently it is displaying off screen despite the reset. What happens if you press Esc, or Enter? You might try turning on Narrator on your computer - that will read the contents of the screen and possibly give additional insight.

Also, though, try updating your graphics device driver, or trying a different display if possible.

Just updated the studio driver. When i press esc or enter it slightly fixes things. I can now open the test score, but other problems still remain. All of the menu options are still unavailable, and creating a new score opens up another tab. Plus, anytime I do a function it basically requires me to press either esc or enter to continue. Is there a setting on windows that can fix that?

If you mean that creating a new score opens a new window, that's normal. But, something is obviously still quite wrong. When you say menu options are unavailable, does that mean only the menu, and n normal functions like note input are fine?

It would be useful to do another screen recording showing what works and what doesn't. You can post it to YouTube as unlisted and put the link here.

As for whether some Windows setting might fix it, I guess that will depend on whether it's some Windows setting that broke it. What you're describing here is not something I've heard of before.

So, this really does look very much like the problem some report with multiple monitors where menus and dialogs display on the wrong one, but I believe you say you only have one connected. It sure seems like Windows thinks there is another, though. Maybe check your display settings in Windows to see if it lists anything else connected. Maybe somehow this can happen if you've created multiple virtual desktops? If you have, try opening in another. And see https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues/24232 for more on the status of that issue.
