Separate a beam of notes into pairs of twos
Is there a way to separate a beam of 4 notes, into a pair of twos?
MS always binds those in at least 3-notes.

MuseScore should do the correct example by default. But you can set the beaming manually and also via the time signature properties

indeed it now does.
I initially copied the notes from an older MS score (from musescore.com), and was trying to separate them later. But adding them anew works as expected.
Yes, of course. For example. my Musescore (3.7) does it in this way, the correct one:
And you have several options:
1) Click on the 4/4 measure and change the properties.
2) If the 4/4 measure is always wrong, create a new 4/4 measure and set the correct beam there.
3) You can also use the "Beam properties" palette and set the beam of the 3rd note as "Beam start".

I use MS 4.4.3, and works per default (when typing), yet not when I copy it from an older MS score.
Still, for the learning effect I'd like to get this straight: where is this to be changed in the Time Signature Properties?

actually the problem still remains:
on a manual input, I am trying to separate the 8s into 3 pairs.
Yet, after adding anything after the second pair (here I still have two separated pairs), it all gets connected automatically.
Best I can do it the middle not paired:
So what is the solution to this one?

"where is this to be changed in the Time Signature Properties?"
In the three "strips" showing connected 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes and 1/16 notes just click on a note to toggle its connection to the previous note. The icons from the "beam selector" section can be dragged to the notes in the three strips to allow sub-beaming to be changed.
