In Musescore 3, Palettes and Start Centre are black windows

• Nov 18, 2024 - 21:39

This happened today, just a few minutes ago. I opened the program in the latest version of 3.X.X, left for a few minutes, and when I came back it was exactly like this. It's a Windows 11.

Update 1: All the drivers are up to date, I have no idea what has changed that made the menus look like this. It's only the Palettes and Start Centre, every other window and widget works perfectly. Also, despite appearing black, they still retain the functions, and you can go to the YouTube videos in the Start Centre and select recent works, as well as apply the different elements from the Palettes window. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, turning the laptop off and on again, and it hasn't worked either.

Update 2: Problem persists, tried practically everything except formatting the laptop and installing everything from a blank slate.

Update 3: I have tried using MuseScore 3.7 / Evolution, and the problem also persists there, with the two exact same windows: The Start Centre and the Palettes. None of the other windows or menus seem to have this problem, it seems to be a graphical glitch that happens only on those two windows while using Musescore, as nothing else has given me any problem. I attached a new image showing not only the two glitched menus but also the Play Panel, the Master Palette and the Synthetizer. Is there anything in those two specific menus that is done differently to the rest but similar between them for it to cause something like this? As far as I know, the only difference between normal behavior and this glitch is that I had to open and close the program three to four times in a single day without doing anything on it due to being busy, and then letting it open but inactive for a couple hours at most the last time. Maybe something in there triggered the glitch? I have no idea at this point, and I don't understand why this problem persists even when changing graphic drivers and when reinstalling the whole program...

I'm currently working on Musescore 3 because I'm used to how the playback function works in it and I use it to produce music. I'm slowly trying to go into 4 but right now I've progressed a lot in the project in 3 and migrating it to 4 would require a complete rework of the sound including soundfonts, the whole dynamics, etc etc. I guess this is the call for me to migrate into the newer better version but I' stumped at not being able to finish this in 3... I guess I'll have to ask for an extension.

It took me several hours but I migrated the file and the soundfonts to MS4 and... turns out it still sounds completely different. There's this one synth sound I was using that sounded great in MS3 but in MS4 it somehow sounds like very bad synth strings. It seems that there's differences to how soundfonts work in MS3 and MS4 so MS4 is no longer a viable option for the sounds I wanted...

I have the basic and advanced workspaces and have tried switching between them, and also created a new one with a generic name to try and see if changing the workspace helped, but it didn't work either.

Also a thing happened just a few minutes ago, went to check on the program again and I could see the palette window but only under a certain condition: something in it had to be moving. The window has retained its fuctionality all this time despite it being blacked out, and when you reach into it you can grab the different elements and put them on the music sheets, but you still can't see them. In this case, however, I tried moving one of the elements around and the whole window started blinking into view as long as I was moving the element around and inside the window, shifting it from the top to the bottom of the palettes, but it stopped and blacked out again whenever I pulled the element out of the box or stopped moving it. I wish I had taken a video, but as soon as I set up to record it it stopped happening!

You can try to install musescore 3.7 (also known as evolution)
Maybe that one won't have the issue and you won't need to adapt your scores to version 4 then.

What could be wrong with the graphics drivers? I've made sure to look them up, and they're both up to date. My laptop has two graphics: an AMD Radeon Graphics, and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. I've checked them both and the only thing is that earlier that day, on the 18th, the AMD Radeon had a problem starting (this seems to have been the problem I had with that game earlier on the day) but then it worked properly without any issue. There isn't an option to roll the driver update back (it's greyed out) anyway, so I don't know what else to do. Has nobody else experienced something similar?
