pickup measure: can't reduce size, and can't delete
In the attached score, the pickup measure takes up the full page-width, instead of being a reduced-size partial measure at the start of the first 4-bar line.
I've tried selecting the measure and decreasing layout stretch.
I thought I'd delete it and recreate it, but when I delete it, the entire score drops down by over an octave (wierd).
Attached file was created in MuseScore 4.5.1.250800846 on Windows 10.
Thanks for any advice...

What did I do?
- Remove all system locks
- menu Format / Stretch / Reset Layout Stretch
- menu Format / Measures per system: 4

OK. That fixed things, though I manually inserted breaks where I wanted them. Thanks, cadiz1.

@cadiz1 :: I was able to do it more simply. In 4.5.2, I went to Properties / Measures and under Move to system, clicked Next. It was added to the lock on the next system.
I'm'a guess that OP inadvertently locked the "second system" without the pickup measure.

Yes, except that I had noticed that the stretching of the measures was far-fetched or at the very least inconsistent. In the Measure Properties (and in the first measures e.g.), this stretch is set to 0.00, whereas from the measure 9 onwards it is set to 1.00.
Reset (to "default" 1.00) is not possible in the presence of system locks. This is the reason for my approach. In the end, this results in spatially consistent measures.
I did start this score by copying from a previous one, so that may have something to do with my issues.
And deleting the pickup measure doesn't really drop the whole score by over an octave, it changes the score from bass clef to treble clef.

What was this "from a previous one" score? Can you attach it?
But this has nothing to do with measures stretches. And as shown, you can reset it easily in the present score.
