Mid-score instrument changes - possible with v2.x ?

• Nov 4, 2014 - 12:34

This is one feature which is quite important for when I am transcribing scores for export to MusicXml.

To be clear, I need to start with a single staff and then switch to a grand staff and vice-versa.
This is not to be confused with hiding unused measures, however.
I have seen that finale (oops, hope I didn't annoy anyone with that) says it can do this with « Adding mid-score instrument changes » .

Will the same ability be available in v2 ?
Will it be supported in the MusicXML output ?

a mid-staff instrument change would not change the number of staves, just the sound.
a mid-score instrument change, happening at a line break, could changed the number of staves, and would be achieved with 'hide empty staves'
You could also 'fake' a mid-staff instrument change by using 'hide empty staves' and horizontal frames (which you can then resize to have 0 width)

You are right, it is a mid-score instrument change - I did not make any mention of mid-staff changes.

As I had said previously, using the "hide empty staves" method would not achieve what is needed - unless lengthy work has been undertaken to correctly export this to MusicXML.

In the current version (v1.3), MusicXML export for this feature - hiding empty staves - is not implemented.

Indeed, the link I gave in my question relates specifically to mid-score instrument changes.

So, now that we are on the same wavelength - will the next version be able to do mid-score instrument changes rather than faking them as you suggest ?

MuseScore 2.0 Beta/Nightly *does* do mid-score instrument changes, but it doesn't define this term the same way you do. As far as MuseScore is concerned, it's just a playback thing, and doesn't affect the number of staves or any other visual properties of the instrument. I'm not sure if/how MusicXML would support that if it were to be implemented, but the more direct way would seem to be to hide the measures themselves on the staff you don't to see, via Measure Properties. That seems more likely to be something supported in MusicXMlL although I haven't tried or looked up whether MusicXML supports it at all.

I just did a little research in the forum, cause I encountered a similar problem. I am writing a symphonic score and I need to change instruments basically every of the four movements. The problem ist, that when I use "hide empty staffs" that he hides all empty staffs not just only at the end of every movement with the instrument changes but he also hides empty staffs of needed instruments within the score. Now I wonder, if there is a way to make a distinction between instruments, used in the movement and instruments that are not used in the current movement or if such a feature would be provided in a coming update of musescore.
