I don't know about Mac, but Ctrl+W is normally the shortcut for closing a *document* on Windows & Unix (at least the window managers I know). Alt+F4 is the usual shortcut for closing a *window*. And the latter works.
Interesting. On a Mac, the Cmd+W shortcut is all there is. It closes things like LibreOffice's Start Center, FireFox Preferences pane, and so on. Alt+F4 is one of those global system shortcuts that I mentioned at //musescore.org/en/node/47361
—in other words, it's already taken.
