musescore 2.0

• Mar 31, 2015 - 21:45

I greatly dislike musescore 2.0 and I think it was a huge waste of time creating it. But seeing that I can no longer download version 1.3, I guess I'm stuck with this one. Since I am stuck with this version, I am asking if an alto clarinet could be put into it somehow? Or if there is a way to make another instrument (the alto saxophone for example) sound like the alto clarinet?

I guess you were intending to troll with your comment about greatly dislikling all the wonderful new features and improvements, but sure, I'll bite. I assure you it was a not a waste of time to create 2.0 - virtually everyone agrees it is an *enormous* improvement over 1.3 in every possible way. There are zillions of fantastic new features and improvements, all of which make it easier to create scores that look better than ever. I can only guess there is some particular feature you are having trouble figuring out (perhaps the menu location has changed or something), but if you explain the difficulty you are having, I'm sure people will be more than happy to explain.

Okay, take it easy. Calling people trolls isn't productive—I know because I've done it before. ;| My question is entirely serious, though: @frenchhorn1, I'd love to hear what it is you disagree with. Chances are, the problems are not insurmountable. If it's something like you're missing the Navigator or you don't like the way paste operations are handled, would you believe you overlooked something? :-) As Marc Sabatella says, we'll be happy to help you figure it out if you just tell us what the problem is.

Your comment really amuses me. Sorry. This is not the first time someone has accused me of "trolling" something new that was supposed to be better. Even though it does sound like I am, I can assure you it was not meant to sound the way it did. I do agree there are some new features to the musescore program that are noteworthy. For me, it change. I hate change. This may make me sound like a child, but it is just the way I am. The same thing happened during the switch from version 1.2 to version 1.3. I nearly had nervous breakdown when that happened. I hope this cleared up any confusion (probably not). If not, I'd be happy to elaborate further if you post a response to this. Once again, sorry for the confusion.

Wow, and the change from 1.2 to 1.3 was next to nothing - mostly just bug fixes :-). Whereas 2.0 is a tremendous change - virtually everything at least *looks* different, and quite a few things *work* different. Better, but different to be sure. So thanks for explaining. I can see that it will take a while to get used to. But I do urge you to give it a shot. It really is a huge step forward.

BTW, nothing about the 2.0 installation process should have required you to uninstall 1.3. So unless you chose to do so on your own for some reason and explicitly went in and did this, it should still be there waiting for you.

Anyhow, whether or not you personally end up making the adjustment, I hope you can also be sensitive to the fact that a lot of people really do value the improvements, and that it truly was not a waste of time to bring so many fantastic new capabilities to so many people!

Thanks for understanding. I also hope that last paragraph was not intended to be read as if you were talking in an angry/raised voice. I really did not intend to offend anyone who worked on creating the new version. Sometimes I get extremely frustrated about certain things. I pay attention to what I say or write, just not how I say or write them (which sends the wrong message).
Besides version 2.0 being different, I have also had problems downloading music from online. C:\Users\Owner\Pictures\Musescore.png This is the screen. I am not sure if the link is working or not.

No, I was not meaning that paragraph in an angry way at all. More of a gentle reminder :-)

If you do have specific questions of suggestions, do post about them here rather than via email - it's good to have the discussions publicly, where multiple people can give feedback and perhaps benefit from any advice given.

The link in your post above is to a local file on your hard drive. (C:\Users\Owner\Pictures\Musescore.png). That won't work. But you can use the "File attachments" link below where you type your post to upload the file & attach it to a post.

Understood, but please do elaborate—for the developers' sake, without saying things like "I hate this" or "this was a huge waste of time." You've piqued my curiosity. Let me guess: you don't like the new UI theme? That's the change that first disturbed me, actually. Again, though, if it's something practical like the absence of the Navigator, we might be able to get your installation of 2.0 back into a state where you're more comfortable with it.

I know lasconic (Nicolas Froment's username) exactly as well as you know me—I've never met him, but we've communicated. I'm just a fellow user. So, if he has time to help you, that's great, but the rest of us will never know about it. That said, it's usually better to ask questions in the forums rather than sending personal emails to the developers, who are by definition busy people who might not have time to waste helping users (no offense—what's done is done). Is it the new sound? Did you prefer the old synthesized instruments? (Again, there is a solution.) I'm dying to know here. What is it?

I had several reasons why I did not like the new version. Instead of going into thorough detail, I am going name what I did not like from the release notes.
Uses Interface: I did not like continuous view feature, nor did I like the new start center.
Playback: The new sound font really bugged me. I know there is a way to change it, but I have not looked for it yet.
I also did not approve of the mid-score instrument change.

Overall, the new version seems to be more user friendly. The playback is also continuous. Even when there are no notes to be played, it continues until there are no more measures.

There are many new features that I do approve of though. The linked parts and the album really got my attention. I thought the playback of more score markings was very interesting, as well as the flexible chord symbols.

As I said before, the main reason I did not like the new version was because of change. Many would say that the "bad features" (opinion based) do not outweigh the other improvements. I agree with that. My reasoning is that even though there are many new improvements that I approve of, we were living without those features before version 2.0 was released. This is what caused me to think there cons outweigh the pros. Over these past few days, I have been playing around with the new version and have changed many of my previous views. For me, I will just have to get used to it. It will not be long before I stop using version 1.3 altogether and just focus on version 2.0. Therefore, I retract all of my previous negative comments on version 2.0. I hope this helped answer some of your questions. And again, I will be happy to answer any more questions if this one is not satisfactory.

It occurs to me you might be misunderstanding what Continuous View and Instrument Change are. As Jojo suggests, if you don't see a need for them personally, simply don't use them. There are cons to these features whatsoever - they simply don't impact your life in any way if you don't use them. If you never change to Continuous View, or never add an Instrument Change text to your score, then it's like these features were never there. So I'm thinking it's possible you are confused and thinking something else you are seeing is continuous view or instrument change when it's really something else? Could you explain the "con" you are perceiving?

As for the sound, I guess it's a personal thing, and some people apparently do for whatever reaosn prefer the more artificial, "80's-synth" sound of the 1.3 default soundfont (TimGM6mb) to the much more realistic sounds of the 2.0 default FluidR3). But in both cases, this is just a default and you are welcome to use any soundfont you want. So 2.0 is perfectly capable of using the 1.3 soundfont and vice versa - and both versions also also capable of using the very many other options available. I would recommend doing a little more listening, different kinds of scores played with different soundfonts, to see which ones please you most, and then you can use that soundfont in both 1.3 and in 2.0. Overall, if you value realism, perhaps the best is one called "Timbres of Heaven", but there are others like "GeneralUser GS" that have other advantages such as an especially well-balanced sound. I really can't see any advantages to the 1.3 default TimGM6mb - it's not very realsitic or very well-balanced. I suspect even someone averse to change will quickly realize the other options lsited are pretty much all much better.

See http://musescore.org/en/node/36171 in the Handbook for 2.0 for information on soundfonts, including links to those and others as well as instructions on how to install them.

As of the current moment, I have figured out how to fix many of the problems I have been having thanks to the advice of you and the other people who commented on these posts. So, thanks. I really appreciate it. And as for misunderstanding what the continuous view meant, I did know what it meant. I just didn't know how to get rid of it. And mine was not in the classic Page View as ZackTheCardshark said it is supposed to be in the comment below.

In reply to by frenchhorn1

User interface: You should be in classic Page View by default, and if you won't be switched to Page View unless you do it deliberately. You can also permanently get rid of the Start Center, if you want to, in the Preferences (see attached screenshot).

Playback: As you say, there's a way to change it—more or less the same way as in 1.3. The only difference is the initial default SoundFont. Nothing's locked in.

And you might have something else mixed up with mid-score instrument change—you might as well be disapproving of guitar tablature. The fact that MuseScore now has support for it shouldn't trouble you.

One more thing, though: you said you "will just have to get used to it. It will not be long before I stop using version 1.3 altogether". That's an acceptable course of action, but it's also okay to ignore version 2.0 and keep right on with the version you're most comfortable with. You should only use 2.0 if you actually feel like it's an improvement over 1.3. Shoichi linked you to the page where you can download 1.3 again.

Nonetheless, considering that the "bad features" can mostly be basically reverted or are optional in the first place, I think you'll come to enjoy 2.0 much more than 1.3.

Best wishes,

Zack
