2.0 crashes when printing

• Apr 30, 2015 - 21:32

To make a long story short, I used musescore 1.0 a few years ago. It was limited, but it worked well for what I needed at the time. It still works and prints fine.

I just downloaded 2.0, and I like it much better. However, the program crashes every time I try to print, or export a pdf or xml.

The first message is: "Musescore.exe has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem."

The second message only differs in the second part, where it says that "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I'm running Vista Home Premium, on a quad-core computer that is still pretty decent.

I've tried unstalling and reinstalling the program. It didn't help. I've tried running as an administrator. That didn't help either.

Can anyone here help me?

Many thanks,

Jeff

Instead of re-installing, you should also try to revert to factory settings, as explained in the Handbook. Reinstallation doesn't do that.

If neither that nor the nightly build helps, please attach the specific score you are having problems with and precise step by step instrucitons to reproduce the problem.

Surprised you are seeing a problem exporting to MusicXML. Does this happen after the dialog prompting you for the filename appears, or before? Anything unusual about the folder you are trying to save to - like maybe it is on removable media or a network drive?

In looking at instruction to revert to factory settings (although I never changed any settings), I found this instruction:

6.Click after the quote and add a space followed by a hyphen and a capital F: -F

What "quote'?

When attempting to export, first there is a dialog box giving me some choices. but whatever choice I make, it crashes.

My setup is as Bb as they come. No unusual folders or drives. Plus, none of the documents are unusual. The program crashes even when trying to print simple default templates with no modification from me whatsoever.

Thanks for the clarification!

The instructions were easy to follow. Unfortunately, the result was the same.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

My wife heard of my struggles yesterday, and said "Why don't you just write it out and I will load it into Sebelius?" She doesn't get it. If I wanted Sebelius, I would already have it on my computer. While Sebelius is a good program (I wrote a music book using Sebelius that has sold thousands of copies around the world), I'm looking for something simpler.

Obviously, I am willing to go the extra mile to make this work.

I'm assuming that Vista could be the main culprit here, as I noticed that it was not supported in 2.0. My projected workaround is to load Musescore onto my wife's Windows 7 computer, and then take files from my computer to hers (via flash drive) and print there. A pain, but better than nothing.

OK, to sum up, 2.0 is easy to use. I can create content. I can even import 1.0 files. But it will neither print, nor export to ANYTHING without crashing the program. That includes even the simplest of files, such as My First Score.

It crashes as I outlined in my first post.

I just tried the portable version. The same thing happened.

The idea of having to change computers to print is less than ideal. Plus, there would be no need for a portable version, as I can simply install the program on my wife's machine.

I should have added the following detail. The problem with adding any printer or virtual printer, is that the printer dialog box does not open. When you select the printer button, the program simply crashes without giving you a choice of printer. So, it is very unlikely to be a printer driver.

On the other hand, the export dialog box does open, but when you make ANY selection, it then crashes.

There is no option (right click on the Windows Installer Package) to install as an administrator. However, as I mentioned earlier, I can open and run the program as an administrator, but the same problem persists.

This is not easy, I understand.

Dear all,

Marc just has pointed me to this thread here, after I had posted my own problem there:
http://musescore.org/en/node/58541

I am experiencing a very similar problem: MuseScore crashes when I try to print of export to PDF.
The print dialogue never appears, instead the described crash of the software happens.
When trying to debug it, the debugger points to this DLL:

Qt5PrintSupport.dll

I am not an expert, I do not know what this DLL is for, but it might be incompatible with my installation of Windows 8.1, 64 bit.

Interestingly, any other export works fine. I can export to SVG and PNG, also to MusicXML.

First I thought it was something in my score file, but then Marc was able to create the PDF from that file.

Interesting is also that the error described here in this thread happens on a Vista PC, while mine happens on a Windows 8.1 PC. It seems that only Windows 7 has no problems with printing and exporting then. This could mean that the error could be fixed by using another version of that DLL. Maybe one can just overwrite it in the folder of MuseScore?

Many regards,
Reinhold

OK, I finally had time to install Musescore 2.0 on my wife's Windows 7 machine. I carried over the file created on my machine, using a flash drive.

After loading 2.0 on her machine, I attempted to print a My First Score file. All I got was gibberish. But that is another issue for another day. The good news is, all the dialog boxes opened, and I was able to load the file from the flash drive.

Since I couldn't print, I made a PDF, saved it on the flash drive. For some reason, it still would not print on my wife's machine (to be fair, her printer setup is king of weird), so I took it back to my machine. It printed fine.

So, I have a workaround. I want to thank everyone for looking at this issue. If you can fix it, great. But since it seems that few are having this problem, I understand if you don't.
