What is "Staff distance" used for? I cannot see any change in the score no matter how much I alter it.

Its the distance between staves of a system. A special case is "Accolade distance" which sets the distance for the two staves of a piano system.
If you have only one instrument with one staff then changing "Staff distance" does nothing.
