Musescore crashes on print

• May 27, 2015 - 19:58

In despair. This is not a new thread and have reported problems. I previously had Windows Vista Home Edition (which worked perfectly with MS 1.3) but I was unable to print or export using Musescore 2.0.1, which shut down when I tried (after several uninstall and redownloads). All reported.

I borrowed a laptop with Windows 7 and was able to print (did not try to export). I decided to have my laptop wiped - with all the inconveniences - and Windows 7 Ultimate put in as my OS. WHEN I TRY TO PRINT MUSESCORE SHUTS DOWN. If I choose to export, it seems I can, so a minor improvement. I have tried different printers, with the same result.

I am a Musescore "pro" but have had a wasted month or so. I have much that is written in MS 2.0.1 that needs printing but cannot do anything with it. Can anyone PLEASE make any suggestions?

If you can export, it's more than a minor improvement, I'd say - it means you can get your music printed while you perform additional diagnostics to try to figure out what unique quality your home network environment has that MuseScore doesn't like.

I'm not sure what diagnostics to suggest, though. I guess you can start by describing as fully as you can how your network is configured, how your printers are connected to it, what models of printers, etc.

Sorry, not an improvement. Export to wav file does work since upgrade (tho cannot find where it is saved, It's a new OS to me.) Try to save as pdf and MS crashes; no printing possibilities. Home network environment is my laptop connected by USB to HP1022 laserjet (laptop on wireless). Have tried connecting via USB to another printer in the house (HP Laserjet P1102w). Same result. I have not tried with the computer plugged in to the internet, not possible where I do my work.

I'm not remotely computer tech savvy but am happy to try less complex diagnostics that have reached me so far via various threads. All I can say is that a borrowed computer with Windows 7 managed to print on the HP 1022 printer (only once did Ms 2.0.1 crash but recovered later).

Am I being impatient, or is there no more support to come with the problem of MS 2.0.1 stopping running on printing and most exports? I fear I must give up on 2.0.1.

If not, are you able to tell me if anything new I have written in 2.0.1 can be opened in MS 1.3? Also anything written previously in 1.3 but opened in 2.0.1, which now seems to be impossible to open in 1.3? I have 'lost' so much material, in that I can't do anything with it.

Is there anyone else with Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista (tho' mine in now Windows 7) having the same problems?

It's difficult to fix a problem we can't reproduce. Hopefully (?) at some point someone else will report a similar issue and we'll at least be able to try asking some questions to see what your systems have in common. I seem to recall there was some possibiltiy this was a bug in Qt (libraries we depend on) that is out of our hands?

@cadams: I just came up with a brilliant idea (at least, I think so). You have a MuseScore.com Pro account. MuseScore.com lets you download scores as PDFs! You can use it as a conversion tool: save your scores online (privately, if you wish), and then download the PDFs to print. With the Pro account, you can do this with as many scores as you need, for as long as you need to.

Dear Zack

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. My slight worry is that when I go to 'PDF converter' it says "This is a free experimental service which attempts to convert your PDF sheet music to MuseScore (.mscz) files." Of course, what I want to do is convert my MS files to PDF, in order to print them. Is there another conversion option that I have missed, so that I can take an online score, convert it to PDF and download? Hope I'm not missing anything obvious. If I am, could you give me a brief step by step guide?

Thanks

So sorry - ignore my last reply. I am being thick. I think you've cracked the printing problem. I've never downloaded anything as a PDF before and it didn't register with me to go to the "download" tab, rather than the PDF converter.

If you have another brilliant idea about exporting.........

Many thanks

You're quite welcome. My other brilliant idea (which I hesitated to suggest, and abandoned immediately when I thought of musescore.com) was that I could be your MSCZ-to-PDF conversion service—you email me files, I email back the PDFs. This would naturally be a little bit strange, and you might be uncomfortable emailing your work to a stranger.

On the other hand, now that I'm thinking about it further… if I remember correctly, you can only download the main score as a PDF from musescore.com. If you have a score with multiple instruments, and you want to get the individual parts printed, that won't work. So, consider it a standing offer—you can send me a message from my profile page any time you need to. And I really hope that this issue is figured out soon.

In reply to by Isaac Weiss

That's very generous! But FWIW, if you can get File / Export Parts to work, you can export your parts to individual MSCZ files and upload them. If Export Parts to MSCZ crashes too (seems unliekly if regular save works), then you could try saving the parts individually using File / Save As.

But yes, it would be great to understand what is going on here.

Dear Zack

What a very kind offer. At the moment I will not need to be printing parts but I will keep your offer in mind if this continues. I have been successful in printing what I need so far and am very grateful.
I will attempt to export parts as marc suggests.

Many thanks to you both. Can't afford a new computer!!

I find it impossible to print the any 1.3 Musescore page. I'm using two computers. I'm using a Gateway with windows 7 on it and a HP ScreenTouch with Windows 7 and 8.1 installed. I've tried printing and Musescore 1.3 will only print the first three pages of any score I have created, even if the score is many, many pages long. I have no idea why it is limiting me to only three pages when I print. I'm open to suggestions to finding the bug.

I'm also printing to an HP 1102w printer. It's bad enough trying to print a full orchestration to an 8 1/2 x 11 page, but even if I have isolated a given instrument to a separate mscz file, like the piano guide I create from an orchestration I've written, I can't get MuseScore 1.3 to print past the third page of even the score. What gives?

Orchestration is ridiculous to print, because to fit a framework setup that follows the layout of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the print is so small from such a set up, you can't even read it on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. It would have to be printed to an 11 x 17 sheet of paper for each page of orchestration, just to be able to read the entire layout and I would very much like to do that, but I can't even find anyone in my area who has the equipment to print a Musescore file to 11 x 17 paper.

I live in the Los Angeles/San Fernando area. If you know anyone I can work with who won't charge me an arm and a leg to print one of my scores, I'd be open to the referral. I have a new score I finished late last year titled AIRWOLF RETURNS which has been selling off of CDbaby and I would like to print the score on 11 x 17 paper so as to send it into the U.S. copyright office, while keeping one on hand for show and tell on my end, when talking to other musicians and business people.

First suggestion is to update - 1.3 is by now many years old, literally thousands of bugs have been fixed since then. I've never heard of anyone else having a problem with printing all pages of a score before, so I don't think there are any known bugs in this area, but still, so many thousands of bugs have been fixed, it is possible you were hitting some extremely rare corner case no one else did and it was fixed by some some other change, like the update to the Qt libraries we rely on for printing and msot other system interactions.

Meanwhile, what about exporting to PDF then printing that from another program?

As for printing 11x17", any copy center should be able to do that.

In reply to by Marc Sabatella

I appreciate the suggestions. I really am not that impressed by what I'm reading with the Musescore upgrade. Seems that has just as many bugs as the 1.3 version, especially when it comes to printing. This thread I found and am responding to is proof of that. I also didn't like the way the 2.0.1 version uploaded my 1.3 score. All the dynamics are thrown off and I don't have time to fix all of that just to suit the 2.0.1 version. I just want to put the key in the car and go, not spend days trying to fix dynamics. Why should I have to do that? This one fellow on this thread ran into a nightmare of problems with his 1.3 files. I'm glad I read this plus other posts so I hold off from doing any upgrades to the 2.0.1 version.

I tried looking for local copy centers in my area, but no one would do it, given no one has the MuseScore program and they are leery about putting an unknown program onto their systems for printing. I even called a local Kinkos, who are national these days and not even they were willing to upload the program to print to their machines. So unless you know someone in my area who can do it, I'm out of options. So I do want to correct you when you said that any copy center will do it. No they won't.

In reply to by prodigyboy

Any copy centre worthy of the name should be able to print from PDF. AS Jojo suggests - use Batch Export to save your scores to PDF and then take them to the copy centre.

Regarding the dynamics being thrown "off" when loading a 1.3 file into MuseScore 2 this is because most elements now have pretty good default placement, and it is imposing this on the custom placements you did in 1.3 Try selecting one then choosing "Select All Similar Elements" from the context menu then press CTRL+R they should all then jump to the new default positions.

Editing in MuseScore 2 is so much easier that I would encourage you to persevere with it - I am now producing scores twice as fast as I used to do with 1.3 due to the improved automatic layout.

Not sure what you have been reading, but 2.0 is an *enormous* improvement over 1.3. Sure, there are bugs with it as well as any, but again, an absolutely enormous improvement in virtually every conceivable way. But it is true that scores that contain very many manual adjustments might require tweaking when loaded into 2.0, because the adjustments made in 1.3 were often based on old bad/buggy default position, whereas improvements in the defaults for 2.0 sometimes make those adjustments wrong.

Yes, there may have been one or two people who have very unusual print configurations that cause problems we have not been able to diagnose - and obviously, this was true in 1.3 as well, as your case demonstrates.

Anyhow, yes, and copy center will print a PDF - of course they won't want a MuseScore file. Just give them the PDF.
