Newbie question about entering articulations

• Jul 6, 2015 - 20:15

What's the most idiomatic method in MuseScore of selecting all of the slurs and articulation marks in a region and copying them onto existing notes in a different region?

I've tried this: select a region. Right-click on an articulation mark, and choose "Select... All Similar Elements in Range Selection", and then all the articulation marks turn blue. Then I right-click on a slur, and I find that I don't have a range selected anymore, so I can't choose "Select... All Similar Elements in Range Selection". I can choose "Select... All Similar Elements in Same Staff", but that isn't what I want, and, besides, the articulation marks become un-selected if I do that.

I've also tried this: go to the Selection Filter (F6), and uncheck everything except Articulations and Slurs. Then I select the range, and I find that the slurs turn blue, but not the articulation marks. I copy (Ctrl-C), then click on the first note of my destination, and paste (Ctrl-V), and nothing is copied, not even the slurs.

Did I mention that I'm new here? Sorry if this question is an obvious one. Any help would be appreciated.

You were on the right track the first time. Once you had the the articulations selected, just copy and paste them without worrying about slurs. Slurs can't be copied and pasted in that manner anyhow.

Another possibility is to just copy the entire region, notes and all, then use the repitch mode (the icon next to the "N" on the toolbar) to change the notes.

Another possibiltiy is to not think in terms of copy and paste atall, but rather explode. If you've entered horn parts as chordsa on a single staff, then use Edit / Tools / Explode to split these into individual parts, the articulations and slurs come along for the ride.

I'm familiar with repitch mode, and am certainly intending to make use of it. And I use "explode" all the time in my arranging/composing workflow, a habit which I developed many years ago as a Finale user. In fact, I've already taken the trouble to expand and clarify the Handbook documentation about that command considerably.

However, if it's true that slurs can't be copied and pasted independently, then that's a serious limitation isn't it?

Serious is in the eyes of the beholder, I guess. I could see how it might save me a few minutes per big band chart, but I wouldn't see it amounting to much more than that given the availability of repitch mode and explode as alternatives. And realistically, entering slurs is so fast - select range, press "S" - I end up just entering them individually as often as not.
