Lost MS file
I seem to have lost a file that was in MS2--Rondo Capriccio--Piano I cannot find it in MS2 or in my Recycle Bin. I may have inadverdantly replaced it with the unfinished file I used awhile back on MS Forum as an example of a sound problem. (I deleted that and it's in my Recycle Bin.) It does or DID(?) exist on MS this morning, since I printed an entire copy on my printer! Is there ANY way to restore a file through the MS.org system? Or maybe I could make a copy of by scanning manually from the complete printout I have from my printer, and create a new file, but don't know how that could be transferred to MS2 for sound, etc.?

Thank you, I will study this, but I never shared the complete piece, only a few measures of the beginning that Marc Sabatella looked at as an examkple of the tech problem I was having with playback sound at the time, since resolved, I think I may have replaced the completed good file with the bad incomplete one. I never put the good one on MS.com or anything like that.
I thought that MS always saved an extra copy of your file, the one that begins with .mscz something like that? I did not think it could be deleted? I can't find that one anywhere either of my lost file.

OK, I studied the info--it has a lot of tech-speak. Please enlighten me, what is OS Documentation that I 'm supposed to refer to? What is the hidden mode in Windows and how do I find/access it?? Thanks Del

Have you followed the links in that document? These should eplain it.
OS == Operating System, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, etc.

Yes, I followed the links. On Windows I got Window help and set show hidden files. I think the Rondo is now showing under my downloads folder--but i get a message cannot open file, file extension .mscz, not supported. Now what do I do? How can I rename the file, etc. or remove the dot if it won't open?

just rename so the extension loses the trailing comma, as explained in the HowTo.
Rightclik the file in Explorer and rename. You Need to explicitly change the extension and click away the warning after that.

Seems only the bad incomplete file is showing--deleted it to save confusion. I do NOT see my good complete file of Rondo anywhere, even after choosing show hidden in Windows. Frustrating. I ;could always reeneter the whole file on MS+, but would like not to have to do that, needles to say. If I had lost one o f my Opera files on MS , I would have given up on Musescore permanently.

Backup your important data. You could use any of the many cloud service for that, dropbox.com, box.com, etc. Or an external disk or thumb drive

I did back up my Anasazi Opera files on a thumb drive. As to renaming, I'm familiar with that of course, but when I tried it (it turned out to be the bad file anyway) the right clicking and renaming, did not seem to extend to where the ,mcsz, extension was. I could not access it. I would like to know how to do this, for sure. It could come up again sometime.

Indeed by default the extension is not selected when doing the rename, you need to explicitly go there using mouse or arrow keys

Well, there is little MuseScore or any program can do if you accidentally save over a file. Mistakes happen. If it is something you worry you will accidentally do again, you might consider using some service that automatically backs up every version of a file instantly.

I think I must have accidentally Saved over the good file.(I could kick myself for that, but as you say, mistakes happen.) So that would mean it's not recoverable from the MS system? The same thing could maybe have happened say, in Finale?
I thought that MS on the automatic saved back- up copy that back- up was permanent.But do I now understand rightly that IF you replace/save OVER the original file, then the former back up copy no longer exists at all? It's VERY important to get this straight! i did not know there was such a saving service--that would be intense, even changing one note would create a whole new file maybe. I doubt that I would want it. So there are companies online that do that?

If that's what happened, then yes. Finale, Microsoft Word, any program would be the same.
The backup is created the first time you save a file in any given session - it preserves the file the way it was when you opened it. So in theory, if you saved over a file, the backup would still be the original. But not if you then opened it and saved it again.
For a while I had my entire Documents folder hooked into SugarSync, which does automatic cloud backup on every save operation by any program anywhere within Documents or its subfolders. I *think* it did automatic versioning too so you could roll back to an earlier version if a mistake like this happened. I believe Dropbox also can do this, but only for its special Dropbox folder, whereas SugarSync let you have this for any folder.
I stopped using SugarSync only because it doens't support Linux, and I rarely use my Windows machine any more.

OK, Thanks for all the information. Interesting! I am now re-entering my Rondo piano file into MS2+, using my print-out copy I made when the completed file still had not disappeared. Lucky I have it to re -enter with. I would have had to try to recall exactly what I had and reconstruct it again. Also, I had to start a new thread on the Forum, a note-entry malfunction.

Well wow! I really did not know Beethoven had written a Rondo with the word Capriccio before I did. Though he says, a la Capriccio, instead of just Capriccio. My Rondo is my own original composed during the last week or so. I only post my own work.I think I may consider renaming mine, but for now will continue calling it the same. Fortunately, I had printed my file on my printer before it got lost. The best way to preserve something is still on paper, I fear== it won't disappear on you with the elctonic speed of light like Music Tach can do. I had posted the incomplete few measures on a comment, so the complete file cannot be retrieved from those attachments under the No Sund on Playback Thread.
