Copying lyrics

• Dec 1, 2015 - 23:16

I don't know if this is a bug report or a feature request, so . . .

I have a three-part vocal harmonization and I've entered the lyrics on the tenor line. The lyrics and note time values are the same in all three parts and I want to print out each vocal part separately, so I want to copy the lyrics from the tenor line and paste them on the other lines.

It would appear that I can use the Selection Filter to select only the Lyrics and then copy and paste. BUT I can't select measures if I'm filtering out Voice 1.

Apparently selection requires the pitches and time values of the notes in the measures, so tere is no way to copy the lyrics without the note pitches, but there are all kinds of things one would like to be able to select without selecting the notes, for instance the chord symbols.

Is there a way to do what I want to do short of retyping all the lyrics and all the chord symbols?

BTW, I'm new to MuseScore; I tried it because my copy of Finale won't run on OS X Yosemite. I'm liking MuseScore a lot! Already I feel safer with it and less afraid that any typo will destroy a day's work.

Welcome aboard! In this case, you'll want to use MuseScore's other powerful selection tool: right-click on one lyric, and then access the options under "Select" from the context menu. In this case, it sounds like "All similar elements in same staff" should work well.

Yes! That was the clue I needed.
As it happens, I have to limit my copy to the lyrics within a 16-measure section, so it becomes slightly more complicated but still possible:
1) make sure Voice 1 is selected in the Selection filter (so I can select measures)
2) select the measures that have the text I need (left-click & shift-left-click)
3) right-click the text
4) click Select > More...
5) in the pop-up window set
Element type: Lyrics
X Same staff X In selection
X Same voice X Same system
Action
* Replace selection
6) click OK
7) cmd-C [very important, else text is selected but not copied]
8) select destination measures
9) cmd-V
10) Marvel!

Simply choosing "Lyrics" and "In selection" in step 5 didn't work; the copy included the notes from the selected measures and then replaced the notes in the measures where I tried to paste the lyrics.

In any event, many thanks for that tip and for delivering it so quickly!
Best
