Hi,

My Ubuntu (10.04) Update Manager has just updated a lot of things, Musescore among them. Now I'm using version 1.0. But now Midi input doesn't work and I've got no sound, when using alsa audio as internal synthesizer (as I used to, before updating). I don't know if only Musescore changed, or also something else... but other audio programs work well after updating (rosegarden, for example).
When I start Musescore on a terminal, I get:
PulseAudio found, but no need to suspend. Starting mscore.real...
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Alsa_driver: Cannot open PCM device default for playback.
init ALSA audio driver failed
init ALSA driver failed
init audio driver failed
sequencer init failed
2cannot parse <1.0>
(...)
Using Jack as internal synthesizer I've got sound, but still no Midi input.
I'm using an external sound card. But it was not a problem before updating.

Thanks a lot! Looking forward to starting using this new version (when it works!),

Pablo

I'm not at my computer now, but I don't think it's necessary to attach any screenshot since I have the default settings. This means:
"Use Jack Midi Output" is not selected.
"Use internal synthesizer" is selected. And from here, only "Alsa audio" is clicked (device: default, sample rate 48000, fragments 3, period size 1024). I guess my default device is my external sound card.

I tried using Jack audio server, and the sound worked (but still no midi input). I also tried with Portaudio, but then I got no sound and no midi input either.

Thanks!

Jack (audio or MIDI) and MIDI input don't work together. The best way is via Portaudio.
Select Portaudio
Restart
Go to preferences -> I/O and in portaudio choose alsa backend
Restart
Do you have sound ?

Hi,

I can't do that now, but I tried yesterday and I think in portaudio there was nothing to choose. If this is the case (I will confirm it later), what else can be done?

Thanks.

Status (old) active fixed

OK, I solved the problem, after some time...

I think it's complicated to make everything work with an external sound card... I used to have input/output with the external sound card, and I sometimes had problems with audio when using more than one program at the same time, or flash videos didn't sound... And Musescore (the new version, for some reason before updating it worked) didn't sound and MIDI input didn't work.

Now I put the external sound card just to work for input, and for the output I use the internal one. With it, every program works well (without incompatibilities or flash video problems).
In Musescore I/O I have "Use Jack MIDI output" not selected, "Use internal synthesizer" is selected and "ALSA audio" is also selected.
With this configuration MIDI input works and I've got sound (from the internal sound card).

It's a pity that I can't make the external soundcard work properly for output, but it's not too bad.

Thanks!
