several newbie questions

• Mar 2, 2011 - 13:26

several things I need to do and can't find in Handbook etc:
The project I'm working on is a single "part", i.e. each "system" is a single staff.

1- I created the file with the "wizard" and gave the staff a name, so that name now appears on the first system and (abbreviated) on all the others. How do I get rid of the name (and its abbreviations)? I don't want to get rid of the entire "instrument", just its name!

2- I have a crescendo mark (first half of hairpin) which needs to "open its mouth" more (needs to be wider). Can I adjust that?

3- How can I have measure numbers show up at the beginning of each system, except not show on one or more specified systems?

4- I found Style -> Edit General Style -> Page -> System distance, which changes spacing of systems globally. Can I tweak this by adding or subtracting a little space above, or below, selected systems?

5- How do I (globally) transpose up or down by specified interval? Can I do the same with only a selected portion?

Many thanks for all your help!

1. Right click on an empty part of a staff. Select staff properties. Adjust.
2. Double-click on the symbol. Use handles to adjust.
3.
4.
5. To globally transpose, select all and go to > Notes > transpose.
For selected sections, select the section (click on first note, shift-click on last note) and use arrow keys to raise or lower.

Perfect; thanks

Unless I'm missing something, this lets me stretch the cresc longer or make it shorter, but doesn't let me open the jaws wider. ?

Brilliant! Many thanks.

1. Further note - once you've done this, you can save it as a template so you can simply reuse it. or just use the existing leadsheet tempalte, which is already set up to have no instrument name. For some reason, some variation on this question get asked almost daily. Meaning things could be made more obvious. But I'd say, if people often find themselves using "create from scratch" and then needing to delete instrument names, they probably are not taking advantage of templates the way they should. In particular, the case of a single staff "score" is so common, there is already a template that does this: "Lead Sheet". if it's not to your liking, make it so it is and then resave.

2. You can "open the mouth" of hairpins globally via Style->Edit General Style->Hairpins. Not sure if it's possible to do for just individual hairpins, though.

3. Same answer in as the other threads where you've asked this: For any measure you don't want numbered, mark them irregular.

4. Add a staff spacer (see the Breaks & Spacers palette & associated handbook entry).
