Renaming instruments and green note heads

• Feb 10, 2016 - 23:40

Hey guys. I have some more questions about MuseScore. Is there a way to rename instruments (for example, changing violins to 1st violin and 2nd violin)? The note heads also turn green when I go high enough on an instrument. Does this signify anything? I know it can't be that the note is too high to play because then it turns red.
Thank you for any answers.

Welcome aboard! The answer to both your questions can be found by right-clicking on the instrument name and choosing "Staff Properties…" The greenish color is a warning that it might be too high for some players (the "amateur" range you'll see in Staff Properties).

If you want to rename ONE instrument ('violins' as 'violin I') you can do as Zack suggests and change the instrument name (both long name and short name; you'll see two windows in the dialogue that pops up); but if you have written two separate voices on one staff and want to split them into two staves, you'll need to create a new staff (ADD>Instruments) and then cut/paste one of the voices into it.

Hit F6 to bring up the FILTER selector; uncheck all the voices you DON'T want to select, then highlight the measures and type CTL+X. That will remove that voice from the staff, and copy it to the clipboard. Next, position the cursor in the new, blank staff you have created, and type CTL+V and it will paste in the material it removed from the other staff.

You can then name that new staff as you wish, using Zack's method.
