I can't count

• Feb 12, 2016 - 08:54

I'm a musical ignoramus, but I thought that the note lengths decreased by half. So I expected that the duration of the notes in this measure MuseScore-query.png would be identical in the two staves.

As you can see, it isn't. Indeed, in the printed sheet from which I am copying, they are identical. What am I doing wrong?

This is with both 2.0.2 and the 2.0.3 unstable on OS X Yosemite.

They should indeed be of the same length, so that quarter rest in top staff is too much. Might be that some corruption crept in. Could you share the score?
Maybe the last half notes chord in top staff is really just quarter notes with a half note head?

The measure in question does have 20/4 duration.
Using the Inspector, look at Note -> Head type for the notes on beat #14 of both staves. The head type is set to 'Half'. Click the arrowed button to reset (actual quarter notes).
Also, the very next half note chord in the top staff has the same issue.

You will have to increase the measure duration to hold actual half notes.
Regards.

AUto is the normal setting for note heads, and one should never normally need to change that. This option is only needed in very cases where you a note to *act* like one duration but *appear* like a different one in terms of which note head is used. An eighth note has the exact same note head as quarter, so tht is why there is no separate options for both of them. The quarter note head *is* the eighth note head, but again, you shouldn't normally ever be messing with this.

The notes on beat 14 appear als half, but are quarter. Select one note on beat 14 (upper line) and press "6", do the same on lower line. Then you have to reenter the last few notes, but the counting is ok.
