Deleting Stave

• Dec 3, 2014 - 10:27

Reported this before but problem still here. Downloaded lasted version 2.0 Beta 1 1efc609.

When selecting a complete stave and using CNTRL-Del. the chords on the bass piano scale do not move up.
See attachment(s). Hope this is clear.

Ctrl-Del is supposed to delete measures (not just their content, that's what Del would do), in all staves of that system.
If you select an entire stave and hit Ctrl-Del, the entire system should go away. And it does, at least in the current nightly build.
If you want to delete a stave, go to Add->Instruments..., select the stave and hit the remove button.

Or did you intend to remove the 1st system, 3 measures? If I do that to your 1st files I get something that looks like your 2nd. And it is exactly what is to be expected to happen, the 3 measure are gone, in both staves.

What I don't understand though is why the bass clef in the bottom staff turns into a treble clef

We were having trouble understand your original report and asked you for clarification - perhaps you didn't see our comments? See http://musescore.org/en/node/40436

Now I understand better. It sounds like you were talking about an entire staff moving or not moving. That's not the issue, though. The staff is moving just as it is supposed to. The issue, as is pointed out above, is that the *clef* of the bottom staff changes from treble to bass when you delete the bass clef. I agree this is non-ideal behavior. For now, you can simply add a bass clef back.

But I do think we should revisit #11838: Deleting first clef changes to treble clef, and consider reinstated the deleted clef when deleting the first measure of a piece.

Well! Although it is recognised there is an issue here somewhere my problem was that although deleting the first stave everything moved up except the bass stave notes. Even if the "proper" way to do it (not documented) is different to the way I did it my way was intuitive. I am new to music and especially constructing scores so please take that into account. I hope my attachments stated my problem clearly but I did not notice the clef change. Thanks for the feedback.

On a small point of testing the code behind this AP, a novice like me is one ideal way of stress testing the program and hope this can be useful as I progress. If I can be of any (novice) help let me know.

The problem is that MuseScore places a treble clef by default at the start of the stave. For piano it creates two staves and then places a bass clef at the beginning of the bottom stave since most piano scores are written this way. When you deleted the first measure you also deleted the bass clef and it reverts to the default treble clef. Thus your bass notes look like they have moved (but they still sound the same).

This also happens if you change clef in the middle of a piece and then delete the measure containing the clef change (which might be the end of the preceding measure). Now in that situation you might sometimes want MuseScore to not delete the clef but I think sometimes you would want to delete it so the argument here would be for a "Feature Request" to either change the default behaviour or have MuseScore check to see if there is a clef change within the section to be deleted and alert the user.

Meantime, just add the bass clef back in if you ever delete a section containing the first measure of a piano score.

I copied the first bar set I wanted the keep and copied it into the first thus not disturbing the first treble/bass clef pair. Then selected the remaining unwanted measures and did edit-bar-delete selected bars.

PS, I edit the forum post on iPAD and there is some difficulty selecting all text as the "select" option does not stay long enough to actually select all text. Also it would be nice to have a CANCEL button instead of having to post. A website issue of course.

To eb clear, I don't think you *did* anything wrong. I think your descrition of the problem confused us. You said the *staff* fdidn't move, but actually, it did. The measures that were on the second system moved up to the first system just as they should. So you did the right thing, and the right thing happened - *except* that the clef changed on you, so the notes did not appear *within* the staff where you expected them. That's why I suggested simply dragging a bass clef back to the bottom staff of the first measure - everything will then be exactly as I understand you wanted it.

Meanwhile, I do hope we reconsider the decision to replace the clef with treble.
