Edit (guitar) fret board by double click

• Oct 24, 2015 - 16:13

Well at the moment you have right click (guitar) fret board diagram and choose
Properties fret board diagram to edit it.

Would be nice if you could do this by double click on a it.

Just like as you can do it for chords.

+ also strange why I can not set up some keyboard shortcut
since I didn't find Properties fret board diagram in the options/keyboard shortcuts.

In general, the only things that can be edited by double-clicking are basic changes to text (such as lead sheet notation) and the size and shape of lines. More complicated things—including more complicated changes to lines or text—are changed through various "Properties" dialogs, accessed by secondary-clicking the element. Fretboard diagrams aren't lines or text, and changing them is a complex thing that requires opening a dialog, so you have to right-click and choose "Fretboard Diagram Properties…".

As to the keyboard shortcut question, there are inevitably a vast number of things that can't be done with a keyboard shortcut, or else the list would be thousands of items long. The question is whether editing a fretboard diagram is a common enough operation to be added to the list.

Okay sorry for not being precise enough on that topic.
I'd like to open the dialog 'Fretboard Diagram Properties' via double click on some
'Fretboard Diagram item' in the score.
Instead of the need to right click and choose this for the context menu.

The idea behind:
Every item/object has a default property that is 'triggered' when I double click on it.
Example - Windows Explorer:
When I right click on a file I see the context menu.
The verb in the context menu that is written 'bold' is the default property...

...and also in MS every item should have been set a default property.

As to the keyboard shortcut question, there are inevitably a vast number of things that can't be done with a keyboard shortcut, or else the list would be thousands of items long.

If the entries are ordered and named nicely it'll be no problem to have thousands of items in there. Furthermore the keyboard shortcut has some keyword filter - just slam in 2-3 letters (like 'fred' or 'chord' ) and the list will just shrink to the some items you are probably looking for.
-> what here is maybe more in question is how the keyboard shortcuts are organized in the source code so it doesn't takes too much efforts to maintain a long list.
-> ..and maybe in some days the devs will change the container in the options for the keyboard shortcut from a Listview to a treeview or flexgrid that does hierarchical listings(=a tree list).

Currently, MS only has the one preset fret diagram (C Major) and I can't figure out how to add more (they're not in the master palette!). So yeah, for people that use them it's really annoying having to open a dialog each time. I imagine it sucks for people that write a lot of acoustic music.

@joseph.
Again, I do not understand. I'm really not opposed to adding new fret diagrams in the master palette. Why not. For the "average user", or the beginner, it may be useful, for sure. But is it really the main problem?
My palette was empty today (after using the "revertToFactorySettings", for other thing...), and I just repeat the addition of twenty-one chords (in order: major chords from C to B, ditto for minor chords, and for the seventh chords). I spent five minutes! And that is done once and for all. Once and for all! So from there, the question of the dialog box to edit the fretboard diagram falls of itself.
Frets.jpg
In contrast, another more important question remains, because it is much more time consuming. Namely the possibility of associating-attaching the chord symbol with the fretboard diagram. Currently, after putting your fret diagram (by double-click for example!) on the score, you must redo an operation for naming this fret diagram.
chord diagram.jpg
I will not go into details, but either you do it from the palette, after preparing the name (see image above) as for the diagrams (but the text style of the chord symbol is not saved - you can do only with staff text except if I forgot anything), or you must enter the chord name directly on the score via Ctrl + K, and then adjust the aligment desired. So it's time.
I believe that this issue has not escaped to the developers. Apparently someone working on it. https://musescore.org/en/node/46751
Let a little time to time.

@cadiz1 Yess good point extent the
'Factory Settings' to a useful preset for Guitar & Ukulele
here is a selection of 31 common guitar standard chords
am A am7 A7 Amaj7
dm D dm7 D7 Dmaj7
em E em7 E7
G G7
C C7 Cmaj7 C7/9
E E7 bm7b5
F F7 Fmaj7
that gives a good starting base and a 'seed shape' to shift them in whatever you'll need.

I'll probably hurt nobody it there'll be are ore can just a C in toolbar even for ppl who don't use guitar fred diagram the impact of this resources overhead (HD-Space; RAM) is really minimal and out of question.

-> And yes sorry for also hang on this be we should really create a new thread on that issue since it feels a little like: This is a new topic.
(... and continue writing in here will lead more&more into off-topic.)

That's some really simple Copy&Paste workaround you can do (once you've at least one fred diagram)

  1. to select some fred diagram that can be changed easy into the next you've like to have in ya score
  2. copy it via Ctrl+C
  3. select the note that you like to assign the fred diagram to and
    paste it by pressing Ctrl+p

__________________________________________________________________________________
..and some other useful hint for the coherent positioning fred diagram & chord symbols:

'Style/General Fredboard/Chords' allows you to set the defaults for vertical offset.
However the vertical offset alone will probably not make you happy in case you like to have the fred diagram beside the chords.
So that'll help:

  1. right click some fred diagram (or chord symbol) ans choose Select/all of same type
  2. in the inspector (Press F8 to open the inspector) use the vertical/horizontal offset to move all at once to the same position.

What about a keyboard shortcut that opens the "Properties" dialog for whatever you have selected? If you select a fretboard diagram and press the shortcut, "Fretboard Diagram Properties" opens. If you select a line and press the shortcut, "Line Properties" opens. If you select an articulation and press the shortcut, "Articulation Properties" opens, and so on. How does that idea sound?

In reply to by Isaac Weiss

I like the idea. Consistent, context-sensitive hotkeys are great. It makes a lot more sense than adding yet another shortcut key to the already enormous list. I would use that for "staff properties" all the time (at least until my guitar tuning preset idea is implemented!), and also for text properties (Changing from pizz. to arco, mute to unmute, etc.).

I think the idea could be extended further (although the hotkeys are already pretty good) in order to streamline the keyboard commands.

Actually, the two things you mentioned raise questions.

"Staff Properties" would be relevant when you had an instrument name selected, obviously; but suppose you select a range on the staff? Or would that be for "Measure Properties"? As for "Staff Text Properties," that's an entirely separate dialog from "Text Properties," and while both are available from the context menu for a piece of staff text, I would think "Text Properties" would take precedence.

On the other hand, both problems could be solved by establishing an additional modifier key to open the secondary relevant "Properties" dialog.

I think I've got a decent scheme for this behavior. For example:

1) Click a text element and press [Option]+[P], "Text Properties" opens; press [Shift]+[Option]+[P], and "Staff Text Properties" (or "System Text Properties," depending) opens.

2) Select one measure on one staff and press [Option]+[P], "Measure Properties" opens; press [Shift]+[Option]+[P], and "Staff Properties" opens.

3) Select multiple measures on one staff and press [Option]+[P], "Staff Properties" opens.

4) Select one measure on multiple staves and press [Option]+[P], "Measure Properties" opens.

5) Select multiple measures on multiple staves and press [Option]+[P], nothing happens and you shouldn't expect anything to.

6) Select a fretboard diagram and press [Option]+[P], "Fretboard Diagram Properties" opens.

Now I want to set this up and try it out, but I can't because, of course, there's no option to assign these shortcuts at all. :-(
