Advanced Guitar Pro support

• Dec 13, 2015 - 15:42

I find, that MuseScore is very light, modern and powerful scorewriter. But I think, MuseScore might be powerful tablature editor. I think you should improve Guitar Pro format tablature support.

You could add native gpx format support. Guitar Pro files should be processed with general file open and file save dialogs. If track is displayed as tabulature in Guitar Pro, it must be displayed as tabulature in OpenScore.

Also it will be great to have edit mode the same as the Guitar Pro, it's very useful for tablature editing. I mean changing notes length with grey +/-, add notes with Num1-9, add pauses with insert key etc..

Today the proprietary Guitar Pro is widespread in rock, metal and etc. communities and has not real alternatives. Your MuseScore can be the free one, that can defeats
the Guitar Pro hegemony.

Thanks for your work. With hope, Anton Karmanov.

We already support import of GPX format, including for tablature. Can you be more specific? If you are looking for us to *export* that format, that isn't likely unless someone with a lot more expertise in that undocument / proprietary format comes on board to help.

We already support note entry via keyboard shortcuts, and you can customize the specific keys in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts.

It's also not exactly like Finale or Sibelius or any of the other programs people might be migrating from. That's just kind of a fact of life. if there is some specific feature you think would be advantageous to add that would benefit everyone (not just people used to the particular program you are used to), and could be added without compolicating the existing interface, feel free to describe it in more detail.

Well, GuitarPro import is failing quite often for me. For example here's a sample gpx file (Marmot.gpx, known music by Bethooven) which musescore v.2 imports as pause-only score. And I never saw musescore imports 2-voice (or 3-voice) guitar notation correctly, only as 2 (or 3) separate tracks (usually with pauses instead of some notes). Again, an example is attached.

You are right.
Unfortunately, importing gpx files (Guitar Pro 6) suffers from several shortcomings, some severe (crash with ottavas lines, corrupted files with compound-time, or "just" the absence of the displaying of the dots) :(

The two cases that you describe corresponding to other issues, severe too :(

- An empty file at the opening ("Marmot"): it's this issue: #87001: [GP]: Empty scores when opening .gpx files, related to layout

- One voice (the first one only) is imported, as in your other file ("Melody of leaves..."): it's this issue: #88036: [GP] In a multivoices context, Voices 2-3-4 are lost in the .gpx format

The workaround is to export these files with the GP5 format (not always for the voices, because GP6 supports four voices while GP5 supports two voices, but in this case, it works)

- Marmot.gp5
- и дождя.gp5

Re the corruption warning when opening grace-note.gpx: GP opens it just fine. I think it is because the grace note is _before_ the first measure. When the grace note is somewhere in the middle, no corruption warning is displayed by musescore.

Found another interesting effect. When importing a gp5 file, MS creates a file with two "tabs" (as control elements in a dialog box, not tablature) -- below the filename there are 2 "sheets of paper", one named after the imported file name, and another after instrument. In the attachtment there's a result of opening Marmot.gp5 from the above (converted from gpx to gp5). First shows only the notes:
tabs.png

Second shows both notes and guitar tablature (edited a bit already):
tabs-ng.png .

Now, I'm not sure what these tabs are, what is the concept behind them. But I can't find a way to edit them -- not inserting/deleting, renaming, or hide/show the guitar tablature in the second "tab" ("instruments" shows just one instrument, Nylong Guitar).

Is it intentional to repeat the same notes twice? What is the concept behind these "tabs" ?

Show/hide the tablature, indeed.
It corresponds to this issue, or former feature request: #40366: Tab staves created in Guitar Pro import do not show in instrument list, can't be deleted :(

A workaround:

1) File -> Parts -> Delete (the Ng-part) -> New -> Rename part title if you want -> Tick "N-Gt" below "Instrument" -> Ok
Result in part: the Tab staff is removed.

Either you are satisfied with this result, either you want to preverse the ability to switch between standard staff/Tab staff in the main score.

In this case, you may add in the dialog box of instruments (shorcut "I") a new staff from the left column (Tab staff for guitar).
Then copy-paste the content of the standard staff into the new Tab staff.

By returning in "I", you may hide the staff (Tab or standard, depending your purpose) by unticking "Visible"

Better that you see the result with "Marmot": Marmot result.mscz

EDIT: the same file after edition of the tab staff: Marmot parts edit2.mscz

A second workaround, depending your purpose always.

1) From the tab (not the main score) "Ng-part" -> File -> Export Parts -> Save as .mscz file

2) By reopening this file, and by going in "I", you may delete (but not hide, in the first intention at least) the Tab staff from now.

See the obtained file: Marmot part-N-Gt.mscz
