making rests invisible
I've checked out Forum discussions on this. Before, I always set unwanted rests, when having two or more voices, by simply right-clicking on the unwanted rest and selecting "set invisible". Very simple! Now MS 2.0+ has apparently made that harder. At least, it does not work for me when I select the rest and then press V on the keyboard. Don't know why. I've already wasted time working today by having to keep getting rid of these rests that clutter up the score whether or not thay are supposed to be there according to music theory. I also tried Ctrl plus X. It did make some rests invisible, but would NOT work on others.

"V" definitely works, so does unchecking the Visible box in the Inspector. Because the rest is still selected, you might not notice right away that it is invisible, but it is, as you will see once you unselect it.
You shouldn't need to be hiding rests very often, however. If you are, that suggests you might possibly be using multiple voices incorrectly, like trying to use voices 3-4 for the bottom staff in an SATB score rather than using voices 1-2 (a common mistake).
Feel free to post a score you are having trouble with, and we may be able to advise you better on how to avoid unnecessary rests. But again, hiding them is a single click - twice as easy as in 1.3, which required two :-)

I am having this same problem. In my case, I was using MuseScore 2 for quite a while with no trouble. When I was urged to update to MuseScore 3, all of my older scores suddenly began showing unwanted voice 1 rests. The scores all have a single line of voice (treble clef staff), with a four-part piano accompaniment (treble & bass clef staff) underneath the voice line. The unwanted rests show up in the bass clef staff of the piano accompaniment. You may see this in the attached file. Could you please explain what to do with this and other older scores to get rid of all this clutter of rests? I suppose, using the V command described above will work?

@cmackirnan1, Use Tools/Voices->Exchange. Always use as few Voices as possible.

There is no need to use (MuseScore) voices 3 and 4 unless there are more than two parts in the same staff.
Rests in voices 2, 3 or 4 (but not voice 1) can also be deleted

And for the record, this hasn’t changed between versions 2 & 3. It’s always been the case that voice 1 is supposed to be filled first, and if you skip it, you will have rests there.
There are 2 things I do to minimise the visual clutter of too many rests.
1. I make rests "small" using the inspector. How small - I can decide in my style settings
2. I make rests a pale grey colour. How pale - I can decide in the inspector
I use both techniques because I have measures with up to 10 demisemiquaver rests among 3 voices in 1 stave (classical guitar stave). Without doing the above - multiple rests disturb reading the music.
Using the above methods - all rests are where they should be according to the music theory, but they do not interfere with notes that clearly stand out and are easy to read when printed.

My primary use of invisible rests in otherwise unused voices is to serve as anchor points for hairpins when the hairpin doesn’t align exactly with a note.
I also use invisible hairpins, dynamics, and tempos to provide sound changes that are not in the as-printed score but would be in the as-performed version by competent musicians.
I have just started using Musescore today. As for rests, I supply bass lines on the bass clef for harmony students to harmonize, and I don't want any rests visible on the treble clef at all.

Hi, How does one make them invisible? I am also using Musescore for teaching worksheets and need to remove rests from bars where the students will be writing their answers. I cannot find this option anywhere in Musescore 3. Thank you for you help.

To make any score item invisible, select it and use keyboard shortcut V.
