Missing notes?

• Jun 3, 2016 - 10:44

First let me say that I know nothing about music. Our church has no organist and I thought that I could use your software to produce music files to play on a laptop, by copying the notes from the hymn book to your template. This process worked fairly well but I discovered that I couldn't reproduce all the hymn book symbols. I have attached a copy of my own Musescore marked with the problems, and a PDF file downloaded from hymnary.org.

Am I doing something wrong or am I simply asking the software to do something which was never intended? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate an explanation in non-musician computer layman's terms.

1st circled problem: The original has both a stem down and a stem up, indicated that that pitch is to be played by both voices. As you can tell this is a 4-part harmony piece (2 in treble clef staff, 2 in bass clef staff). See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/voices for how to create two notes in different voices at the same pitch.

2nd circled problem: similar deal... The original is putting different directions of stems to emphasize that they are different voices. So when inputting into musescore, input each pitch as a different voice.

several more circles are dealing with the same issue as above.

meas 12, you will enter the first half note in one voice, and the quarter notes are in another voice.

The rest of them seem to just be more voice stuff...again, just use one voice for top note and another for bottom. You may have to delete some extra rests.
