Create a new instrument
I need to write for a G Fanfare Trumpet which reads in Bass Clef and is not included in the standard list of instruments.
I went to Programs/Musescore/instruments and opened the instruments.xml file, copied an existing instrument (Trombone), altered its name and pitch and saved the .xml file back into the folder.
The new instrument does not appear in the menu, so I removed the .xml file, re-opened Musescore and the existing instruments still appear which makes me think that the program is not reading in the file.
Am I doing something wrong?
Edited file is included - search for "daz"

Watching this as I've also tried to create a new instrument like this without success.

CHange the file. pop it in the instruments folder ( stick a comment in so you can find your instrument change if need be) then reselect the file in the Options/Preferences menu.
I just noticed in the preferences that the file name is instruments,(comma) xml. Does this have any relevance?

Throwing caution to the wind I selected the new .xml file by moving to the instruments folder and it is NOW WORKING.

Well done! I can't find a folder called :/data/instruments, only C:/program files/

Are you using the instructions here https://musescore.org/en/node/15803? They are quite old (for Musescore 1) and I found them not very clear - anyway, I didn't manage to create what I wanted.
An easier way is to create a Custom Template - modify your trombone as you describe and save it with a new name in the Documents/

No I couldnt find it either so I assumed that it was being cached. When I reselected the file from the correct folder it gives me the instrument option. Now I have to work out the correct note range as I havent cracked that yet

Middle C is 60, the octave above it is 72, etc.
MuseScore indeed doesn’t read that but uses a built-in copy. But you can tell MuseScore to read it in Preferences
If you create an additional instruments.xml file it can be set in preferences to load "in addtion to" the internal one.
Only include your new instrument in the extra file.
