Note stems (I checked handbook first)
Hi Everyone
I'm trying to get one note (in bass clef) to display stem up AND down when inputting Voice 1 and Voice 2.
This is not covered in the Handbook on inputting voices. Maybe it's called something specific and I don't know the term.
(And I wonder why there is a button on the toolbar for flipping but not for this function, which seems related.)
Anyway, I've love some help, even to find the right place in the handbook.
Thanks to you all. Beth

If you really enter notes in voices 1 and 2, the former will be stem up, the latter stem down automatically. Unless you flip stems.

Thanks, but I have been there. I attach an image which might explain things better than I can.
Cheers

Hi again
I re-read the voices section of the handbook and there is no reference or visual example of the single note with a stem going up AND a stem going down, as per the file image I uploaded. Am I missing something?
Cheers

Those are called "shared noteheads" and to get them you enter the same note in both voices 1 & 2. In this case you shouldn't have to, but in cases where the two voices have different durations, you may need to change the chord offset in the inspector to get them to overlap. There is a section in the handbook on this, though it isn't under the page on voices. The section is here https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/noteheads#shared-noteheads.

A single note with 2 stems is not mentioned in the handbook, as there is no such thing: You need two notes, on voice 1 and voice 2, with the same pitch.

Yes,I believe the OP said he was trying to use voice 1 and voice 2 to create what is in his picture.
I'm not sure why it doesn't work for him. Use voice 1 to place a note. Switch to voice 2 to place a note in the same place. Stems are in different directions, just like his image.

Yes, the OP said that, but apparent didn't do it, as it just works out of the box

indeed.
To be clear: this is indeed not a single note at all, but two separate notes, one in voice 1, the other in vice 2. Simply enter both voices normally as per the Handbook - after the G, the top voice has an A, while the bottom voice has a rest. The two G's will automatically share a notehead. You don't need to do anything special to make it happen; just enter the two voices normally and MsueScore takes care of everything for you.
