What is the proper workflow for adding a melody?

Hi, I'm pleased with MuseScore, up to the point where I want to add melody that I know by heart.

I've been thinking about this for quite some time. I'm not a perfect piano player, so using midi instruments will be horrible for me. My workflow is as follows.

1. set the key (E-flat major, C minor)
2. create the melody using step time (NOTE: the rythem is all the way off, but I'll correct that later)
3. go over all notes a second time, and modify their lenghts

Step 3 is a disaster. It's removing notes, adding rests all over the place, not good to work with...
What I'd love is just to be able to lengthen a note, and move all the rest upwards (right), or shorten one and move the rest left.
Kinda like insert mode for "normal" mode.

I've been thinking, what if there could be a "record rythm" option that would allow you to "move" over the notes, using right arrow key.

It would work as follows:
1. select the note where to start
2. turn on the metronome
3. click "adjust rythm over notes", this will start the metronome
4. tap and/or hold right will play the first note
5. to move to the next note, tap and/or hold right again, adjusting the last note to the length that was waited before tapping the next
6. subsequently execute 5.
7. when finished, click the "adjust rythm over notes" to stop the process.

Some options could be:
- shortest note: note length; the minimal note length that should be used
- tap and hold: boolean, tap would not insert rests, tap and hold would insert rests when you dont hold the right arrow key
- connected notes: 0 (off), milliseconds; if the right key is released and pressed again within those milliseconds, it's registered as a connected note adding the "slur"
- staccato notes: 0 (off), milliseconds; the maximum amount of time the right key is pressed to register it as staccato adding a dot above/under the note
