What is the proper workflow for adding a melody?

Hi, I'm pleased with MuseScore, up to the point where I want to add melody that I know by heart.

I've been thinking about this for quite some time. I'm not a perfect piano player, so using midi instruments will be horrible for me. My workflow is as follows.

  1. set the key (E-flat major, C minor)
  2. create the melody using step time (NOTE: the rythem is all the way off, but I'll correct that later)
  3. go over all notes a second time, and modify their lenghts

Step 3 is a disaster. It's removing notes, adding rests all over the place, not good to work with...
What I'd love is just to be able to lengthen a note, and move all the rest upwards (right), or shorten one and move the rest left.
Kinda like insert mode for "normal" mode.

I've been thinking, what if there could be a "record rythm" option that would allow you to "move" over the notes, using right arrow key.

It would work as follows:
1. select the note where to start
2. turn on the metronome
3. click "adjust rythm over notes", this will start the metronome
4. tap and/or hold right will play the first note
5. to move to the next note, tap and/or hold right again, adjusting the last note to the length that was waited before tapping the next
6. subsequently execute 5.
7. when finished, click the "adjust rythm over notes" to stop the process.

Some options could be:
- shortest note: note length; the minimal note length that should be used
- tap and hold: boolean, tap would not insert rests, tap and hold would insert rests when you dont hold the right arrow key
- connected notes: 0 (off), milliseconds; if the right key is released and pressed again within those milliseconds, it's registered as a connected note adding the "slur"
- staccato notes: 0 (off), milliseconds; the maximum amount of time the right key is pressed to register it as staccato adding a dot above/under the note

This seems like a very complicated method. I would think that you would have some idea of the rhythm of your melody as you enter the notes. For me a melody is not just a string of notes. Rhythm is one of the things that help the melody flow. It brings out various aspects of everything about the music. I would think it to be easier to write out the melody with notes and rhythm as best you can. We all tweak things as we go along.
But there really is no proper way to compose. Everyone is different.

There is no one "proper" workflow, but I can tell you MuseScore was definitely not designed for entering pitches then changing rhythms. There are plugins can that can help with that to a limited extent. but basically, no, that's not going to work as a general strategy. You'll want to figure out the rhythms first.

When I say the plugins will work to a limited extent, I mean, within a single measure. They are meant for making small changes, not for completely rewriting the rhythm.

For that, better to simply re-enter the notes from scratch. no need to bother reusing the same measures you already have, just enter the correct notes once you figure them out.

And yes, it's possible to design a system that really does what you are talking about, and one or two programs out there that try to do this, with varying degrees of success. It may happen someday in MsueScore as well since it is a common request. But definitely not something to be expecting to see any time soon. better to learn a "proper workflow", as you term it.
